Having absolutely zero medical training, I write this from the perspective of a patient who has just spent a week at the Richmond Hospital. I was involved in a car crash and was brought into Emergency by the Richmond First responders. The Emergency department staff were outstanding. The place was humming with activity, they triaged me without delay, and performed a detailed examination to ensure I had no serious internal injuries. The staff were always courteous, kind, and attentive. All the qualities one would hope after suffering a life threatening accident. The attending Doctor had some concerns and suggested I be admitted for further tests and observation. And that’s where things started spiraling downhill. There were no beds available β€˜upstairs’ so I was kept in the Emergency hallway for three days. I’ve had no previous experience with the BC hospital system, but I kept asking myself how is this possible in an advanced Province like BC? If we had experienced a major flood, earthquake, or were at war, these conditions would be anticipated. But as far as I know, BC is at peace!! Once a bed upstairs became available, I anticipated that things would improve. Not a chance. My bed was placed in what appears to have been a converted broom closet? The bed itself reminded me of the cots we were using decades ago in military training. What’s going on here? These are the conditions I would anticipate in a third world country. We pay $-Billions in taxes to fund our medical system.. Where is all the money going? I should mention that the staff were exemplary. Very professional, attentive, and caring. Some of this things I saw defy description. Torn floor tiles, missing drywall, filthy ventilation systems, and round door knobs everywhere… including the bathrooms! God help the infirm if they ever locked themselves in a bathroom. Most of my week was spent waiting for tests. Only to be delayed over and over again. I saw trash sitting on the floor and no one making an effort to pick it up. It was no surprise that half the floor got infected with covid, including myself. The state of the BC medical industry is criminal. Obviously, there’s no accountability. And as our political class jump the queue and enjoy top tier care, there is little doubt anything will ever be done about it. All I know is that should I need medical care in the future, I’ll be seeking out private alternatives. My rating is broken down as follows: 10-Stars for the medical staff who perform admirably under miserable conditions. 0-Stars for the facility, which is antiquated, dilapidated, and likely causes more illness than it cures.

My partner has been waiting in the ER, about to lose his thumb, and nobody has come to check on him. We have been here since 9 pm. It is now 11:45 pm and no sign of a doctor anywhere. I can see why this hospital has less than 3 stars. Also, while waiting in the waiting room for my partner, one of the younger male nurses was yelling rudely at a patient who was asking about seeing a doctor. It's pretty scary how little they care about you and your health needs when it's literally their JOB to help you. Uodate: we ended up leaving.

I've had many bad experiences with this hospital, from being forgotten in a room in emergency (they told my mom when she came to find me after 5 hours that I had been discharged. Instead I was sitting in a room with an open wound waiting to get a dressing on it) to being sent home with a broken foot after they told me it was just sprain, and finding out days later it was an actual break. But the most recent frustration was when my aunt had a stroke and was hospitalized for 3 months here. They never once washed her hair, they never did anything more then a very basic sponge bath, they would leave food all over her face/chest for hours and she would go days before they sat her in her wheelchair (which was supposed to happen everyday for one meal). I was very disappointed with her care. So happy she's moved into a nursing home now. There were a few really good nurses, but obviously not enough.

Overall well managed, especially through the pandemic. Outpatient department is nice, too. However, some nurses and doctors did not make me feel valued as a human being. It's disturbing how people with a sheer lack of empathy end up in such a field.

I called Richmond General Hospital to follow up on my family members surgery. Operator and front desk agent were helpful and finally transferred to surgery department for more details. However, surgery repsentative quickly replies with cannot give you any information unless it's wife. Excuse me, patient is not married and no wife. Your staff member then just disconnects the phone. This is terrible service and very unprofessional. Hospital director should really coach your staff with people skills and service. Also feedback, 5-6am parking lot entrance driveway leading to main entrance and emergency was not snow plowed. Vehicles are not able to see the lane divider/islands. Parking lot was fine.

I'm from Surrey but come to Richmond General because I have an amazing surgeon that looks after me here, and I must say the nurses here are absolutely amazing compared to the other local hospitals. They care so much and are very passionate about their jobs and go the extra mile to make sure you're comfortable. I'm Trans and i don't feel discriminated against at all here, and that's a big deal. I've unfortunately been admitted to many of the local hospitals for various health reasons, and Richmond General has been the best, with St. Paul's a close second. If you are sick and need to go to the hospital, Richmond is the place to go. Though i will say you do need to treat the nurses and doctors with respect if you want to be treated with respect. You would think that's common sense, but not too many people have common sense anymore.

It was more than a year ago which I accidentally sliced my finger while using a can opener. My finger began bleeding non-stop from the deep cut, so I called the ambulance but waited more than 2 hours. Then my dad decided to give me a ride to the hospital, unfortunately I waited in a room for another 2 hours because they thought I wasn't serious enough. The nurse called Natalie was rude when I asked how long the wait time will be and I told her if there's any immediate treatment to ease off the pain and she said I'm not a first priority as all doctors and nurses are busy with covid patients. The doctor was more informative and more caring compared to that nurse who I think is inexperience. I understand hospitals are even busier during the pandemic but I think this hospital has really rude staffs in general.

I had a good experience with this hospital. I came in on a busy Friday night and the doctor was great from start to finish, he walked me through everything which was really helpful because it was my first time in the emergency. He then scheduled me for an ultrasound early the next morning and I found out that I had appendicitis which they were able to squeeze me in for surgery that same day. The surgeon and nurses walked me through everything that was happening and put my mind to ease as I was quite nervous and had many questions.
