The south store still has some of the best staff for product knowledge of outdoor sports in the city. Still great friendly service and an ever growing product selection.

Went with a friend to buy pfd's/life jackets for kayaking. Staff came to help us pretty quick after we got there. The guy was super helpful, quite knowledgeable about the products, he didn't push an upsell on us and didn't overstay his welcome which was great. Selection of stock was okay. They didn't have any belt or u-shape style pfds at the time. Overall it was super.

I have been a member for over 30 years and always considered MEC a good place to purchase sports equipment and clothes. That changed today. I purchased a bar extender for my bike. I asked a bike tech what I needed for a Cannondale CX5 and he returned from the back with a part that he said would work. When I tried to return the part the sales clerk said it was a non-inventory part and would not be refunded. I then spoke with the store manager who said the same thing. As I told him, I would not have purchased the part if I thought it could not be returned. I then contacted MEC online hoping for a better outcome. The response was that there are no returns on special orders. I said again that it was not a special order. The response was that all decisions made by MEC on whether an item is eligible or ineligible for return are final. I will not purchase anything from MEC again. This is what happens when a company is run by a private equity firm.

You should talk to your staff about discrimination. They are extremely rude to people of color. I felt very unwelcome in there. As soon as I walked in eye roll from one staff next checking out jackets a grossed out look from another staff next shoes. Staff member helping everyone else except me. I was going to purchase some hiking shoes and a jacket but better to save my sanity and well being. Don’t go in there if you are a person of color. Go to sport check or try Amazon, you’ll find the same for cheaper anyways. Very kind to white people… Thanks

My first impression of this store was that the prices were very high. Don't let that stop you from going hiking, there are gear stores in Edmonton with much more reasonable prices. However, I was able to find a pair of decent pants. The next day, I ordered hiking boots with a pick-up from this store. I paid for them and received an email that it was ready. When I came to the store and opened the box though, there were completely different shoes inside! It was not even the same brand. I was lucky that I decided to check. The associates started looking for the correct pair but didn't find it anywhere. They issued a refund. I'm going backpacking for a week this Sunday and was counting on getting those boots. Really disappointed! And when I contacted Customer Service by email they didn't even reply.

I was looking around at mec's south Edmonton location this afternoon with nothing particular in mind, and found myself in the climbing section, which I often do. I noticed a couple of things on sale and decided on an Eledrid Bulletproof HMS carabiner. I was going to get a second one for a co-worker as well as some Metolius steel key-lock biners. And here's where things get interesting. The Metolius biners scanned at a different price. The clerk, Nicky I think (#1237), argued that they were put away on the wrong hook and wouldn't honor the price. My friend didn't want to pay the extra, as he shouldn't, so we held off on those. Would have bought all six they had, but not now. Then the Bulletproof scanned at a higher price as well. Again Nicky argued. When I asked for a supervisor she disappeared for a bit and came back with some story about how one is clearance from last year, and the new one is more, blah blah. She wouldn't budge. Lost another sale. I worked retail for a long time, almost 20 years. This is not how you retain customers. I was a die-hard Mountain Equipment Co-op customer for about 20 years, but those days are gone along with the Co-op. This new Mountain Equipment Company will have to do better.

I just went in to exchange a brand new raincoat bought for me over a year ago that didn’t fit. The person helping me at customer service was able to refund me super quickly and was very friendly! He also helped me at check out and we had a great chat. I didn’t catch the name of the person helping me in the clothing section, it was a woman with long red hair and was she amazing! I gave her the basics of what I needed (women’s raincoat, $200 maximum budget) and she pointed me towards the perfect jacket immediately. She stood with me while I quickly tried on some sizes and helped me pick the best fit for my needs. 10/10 service and friendliness all around! They are knowledgeable and will help you find the right gear!
