Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) Coverage and Extension

If you’re injured in an auto accident, Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) replaces your income if you can’t go back to work due to your injuries.

IRI has a cap and if you’re a higher income earner making over $108,000 this year, you should consider an extension to your IRI coverage to help replace your income.

To ensure you and your family are protected in the event of an injury, let’s review the basics of IRI Coverage and IRI Extension.

How does IRI help me if I can’t go back to my full-time job?

Income Replacement Indemnity replaces 90% of your net income, up to a maximum amount, if you have a disabling injury that prevents you from returning to your permanent full-time job.

Payments begin after a seven-day waiting period and they continue for as long as you can’t go back to work due to your auto accident injury.

What if I am a temporary or part-time worker?

You will receive 90 per cent of your net income, up to a maximum amount, for the first 180 days after an accident that prevents you from working. Note that if your injuries prevent you from working after 180 days, you will get IRI based on the employment that you were capable of doing right before your injury, as if you had been employed full-time.

IRI is part of Manitoba Public Insurance (Autopac)

Income Replacement Indemnity is part of the Manitoba Public Insurance’s Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) benefits.

All residents of Manitoba who are hurt in auto accidents in Canada or the United States and can’t go back to work due to disabling injuries are entitled to PIPP benefits.

What is an Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) Extension?

It’s optional coverage that is an extension to your IRI. You should consider an IRI Extension if you will earn more than $108,000 in 2022 and you don’t have disability insurance through your employer, or any other type of disability insurance. (The maximum was $103,500 in 2021.)

With IRI Extension coverage, you would get 90% of your net income if you have a disabling injury from the auto accident you were in. The seven-day waiting period still applies.

What are other benefits from an IRI Extension?

Fatality payments: IRI Extension coverage will mean higher payments to your spouse or common-law partner, or to your dependents if you're a single parent, if you are killed in a motor vehicle accident. The payments are calculated using your extended IRI coverage, rather than PIPP's limit.

Retirement Income Benefit: If you qualify for a Retirement Income Benefit, your payments may be greater because the calculation uses your extended IRI coverage rather than PIPP's limit.

How do I get IRI Extension coverage?

You can get IRI Extension coverage by contacting your Wyatt Dowling insurance expert.

You can buy it in increments of $10,000. The cost is $20 per increment, with a minimum policy premium of $50. You can buy up to $200,000 over the PIPP limit.

Terrible Service. Was called to pick up my Jets plate, waited for 15 minutes for the guy to figure out that he couldn't sell me the plate since it needed to be received. There was no one there to receive it. It had been there for a week. So I went back the next day and waited for over half an hour for the woman to figure out what she was doing and renew my insurance and pick up the plate. I have never waited so long, what a waste of time.

These guys are horrible to work with. Whatever you do, go to another insurance broker. They are impatient and hugely incompetent. Good luck trying to get them to answer any questions as they quickly dismiss you and you become another nuisance to them as soon as you pay your premium. Whatever you do, stay away.

My dad and I just came from there. The lady who helped my dad figure out everything he needed for his semi truck and his trailer. She sat with him until she got everything straightened out. We went to 3 other agencies that did not want to help or have the patience to deal with us. We would recommend this place.

The broker I was assigned here constantly fails to follow through on things and doesn’t explain things to me in a way I can understand, despite asking several different ways. She doesn’t go the extra mile to help me and I generally feel like my business does not matter here. I did recently speak with a different broker at the same location who, in a 20 minute phone call, solved all the problems I was having with my insurance, corrected my file, and explained my insurance questions simply and efficiently. I hung up the phone so impressed that I decided to not leave the company and take my business elsewhere at this time. I was debating between two and three stars. But decided on three because it is a good location and it’s clean and has parking right outside and it’s not the worst service I ever received, just hasn’t been positive in the 5 years I’ve been going there.

I had questions regarding our insurance renewal and the increase that was applied. I spoke with Alvin who was FANTASTIC!!! He answered all of my questions and determined that there were additional discounts that could be applied to our policy. Alvin ended up saving us over $700 on our annual premium!! That's what i call fantastic Customer Service!! THANKS ALVIN, GREAT JOB!

Awesome service! We did our process for drivers license and car registration and it took a bit longer due to be a province moving. Alvin was great explaining what was needed, our options and walking us through the process! Ir was really kind of him to stay way past closing time and no fuss about it! You got yourself a customer!

Wasted 30 mins there trying to get replacement license plates after mine were stolen. First the lady asked which vehicle it was for and started to work on the WRONG one. Then she called MPI about getting me replacement Jets plates since they didn't have any there and all she did was tell me I should just try going to MPI myself because they "might" have some there. When I clarified asking "so you're telling me to go somewhere else who "may" have them in stock and if they don't I'll be in the same position I'm in now?" her response was YES! So unprofessional trying to pass me off to be someone elses problem. I'd rather take my chances getting pulled over by the cops than dealing with her again!
