Value Village

Love, love, love Value Village! And, specifically the one in Newmarket, which is run by the nicest people, extremely clean and well organized racks. Easy to find items you are looking for and lots to choose from.

I go in to value village and other thrift stores very frequently at least 4 times a week value village has become Insanely over priced. For example I went in today and they had a stack of comic books, nothing special 50 cents to a dollar a piece at most in any comic book shop but at value village there $7.99 each. That’s 8x the price, That is unacceptable they have things in the show case for hundreds of dollars a few weeks ago they had a necklace for almost $1000, visibly Brocken cameras and outdated tablets for 100 plus dollars. The clothing section is a joke, junkey no name clothing for more then they cost brand new. Mens floral shirts for no less then $11.99. Iv seen single picture frames for as high as $34.99. Very very Used beat up shoes for up to $49.99. Value village takes part in some of the worst corporate greed iv have ever seen in my life. They scrapped the reward program that gave you a decent discount from time to time for a system that rewards you with a single dollar for every $100 spent, what’s the point the prices are so hight that $1saving means nothing. The management and pricing team are certifiably insane. This review is less so about the Newmarket location and more so about value village as a whole each value village in the surrounding area are all guilty of everything mentioned above. It’s greedy, slimy, unethical and predatory by nature. Some people need thrift stores and value village prices out a lot of people and it’s wrong. I am a extremely avid thrifter trust me when I say do not donate to value village and keep shopping there to a minimum, go to a real thrift store like Salvation Army or mission thrift or if your in the areas of Mississauga or Woodstock where there are still goodwills go there.

There are some deals to be had here, but it really depends on what's been donated. I've found the pricing for some items is all over the place, and some items shouldn't be out (they're broken or in really grubby condition given the price). I find this place most useful for shopping for children's books and movies / music if that's what you need. The children's toys are typically over priced and you can find better prices and items at other 'thrift' stores. It's still worth checking the store out and seeing if you can find a treasure. You never know, all luck of the draw really.

Just left the store and the manager (a young lady) was very unhelpful. I asked for a discount on a Starbucks tumbler that clearly had a warped liner inside the cup. She said it was just priced today and the price “is what it is”. She also tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with the tumbler. I collect these, so this was insulting. I’ve had managers reduce the price on damaged items before which is the way it should be. With the price of everything rising, you think this “manager” would give some room to discount an item (that was donated to them) but she wouldn’t. The prices of items at this location is embarrassing. Selling worn down broken items for sky high prices. Whoever is pricing these items is off their rocker. I won’t be returning to this location and management should consider who they have on staff as “front end supervisors”. They don’t know how to do their job. Very disappointing.

Worst value village ever. The manager is a waste of space. She banes people without any explanations. Some workers are very friendly others are the most miserable on the planet. Very jealous individuals especially when you find great deals and they couldn’t get them, Stay away, seems like they have an issue with regular customers. They will find a reason to get you to stop going there. Most stuff is very overpriced. You can find a treasure sometimes but if the employees want it they will find a way to get you outta there. Trying to speak to the manager is a waste of time. She couldn’t care less what you have to say and doesn’t give you any explanations. It’s absolutely insane. There are a couple of good workers and very friendly but it doesn’t make up for the rest of the horrible, miserable staff especially the supervisors, the workers hide things in certain places that they want yo buy and if you find it well let me tell you they definitely get upset. The workers need to have things on the floor for 2 days before they can purchase them at 50% off (most stuff) unless they want to pay what everyone else pays, Anyways enough rambling, not worth your time, just a bad store in general. Jeans used to be $5.99 to $9.99. Now you see them proved from $14.99 to $39.99. Might as well go buy brand new. Rip off. The rest of the stuff in there is way overpriced. Not sure who’s pricing the stuff. Buyer beware.

The store is nice and organized. It is easy to find the size clothing your looking for. The only things that sucked, they took away the change rooms ( I am assuming because of covid, understandable I guess) They also don't give refunds, only store credit. I am personally not a fan of only receiving store credit, especially when I am unable to try stuff on in the store. I didn't buy as much as I had planned to for that reason.

The return policy is not fair. People should have this right to take the items back to the store on the condition that the items were not suitable. I hope there will be a few pragmatic solutions in the near future. However, the boots I bought are nice and practical with reasonable price.

My favourite value village. We found an almost brand new Hamilton Beach coffee maker for $9.99 that works perfectly.
