★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I booked my car for 5 days. I got a quote on Priceline and it was around $500 dollars including the tax. When I got to the counter the employee (I wish I had his name) told me the it would be $700 dollars! I told him are you sure? He said yes with no hesitation. I showed him mu quote and he still didn’t match it.
I think that you should check your employees because they are criminals trying to make over $200 on me.
If I could I would try and give zero stars!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bad service. Their system wouldn't allow any of our European cards as they were not debit. Didn't care to find a solution to get the car we booked (even though we offered to pay cash, online etc.)
We not at least sorry. We went next door to Budget where our cards worked fine!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Abysmal service. We booked a car for a 5-days tour of the island. The employees then proceeded to refuse the credit card (mastercard gold, never a problem with it before) of the driver and refused to even consider any alternative arrangements. We had the money, we booked the car properly and the manager literally made the "I wash my hands of your situation" gesture. As we had to drive to Courtenay that evening, we were stranded in Victoria and lost the price of our room and had to get another one. Kicker: we went to the airport and rented a car from Hertz there no problem with the same card. This franchise deserve to fold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had no issues with our rental. We called the day before and thankfully they had a vehicle available for us. When we showed up, the service was quick and efficient. We drove the Honda Kona, cute little SUV. No complaints and was good on gas. Returned the car with no problem!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fast, efficient service with friendly staff. Be aware - they don't accept debit cards or cash deposits - you must have a credit card issued by a major bank.
I had a wonderful Volkswagen Golf TSi automatic intermediate car: lots of "get-up-and-go". The powerful engine must be awesome with manual transmission.
I really liked the thumb rests on the steering wheel; kept my hands at 10 & 2 (I actually miss them).
A full tank of petrol took me 525 kilometres (326 miles); to refuel to full $63 CDN. The vehicle handles somewhat sluggishly when low on fuel, less weight I guess.
National shares a lot adjacent to Budget Rent-a-car, just off Douglas at Humboldt across from the Victoria Conference Centre, adjacent to the Capital City Station, one block from the Empress Hotel, and a short walk from the BC Legislature Building and the Inner Harbour.
You must enter the parking lot via Humboldt Street, there is no access off of Douglas.

finds “damage” as soon as I return on a small dent on the roof, which was not looked at on check-in. Still get charged $300 deductible.
On phone to dispute weeks later, rep tells me manager has “made his decision” and will not discuss further. $1300 repair, but unable to provide estimate, photos or repair invoice.
Poor business practice from a locally owned operation that should likely listen a little closer to their customers.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I am writing for a reason other than using National. I live right beside National Car Rental on Courtney St in Victoria and since I work from home at times, I hear the constant honking. It sounds like their workers have OCD or some other obsessive compulsive problem because one horn can honk 3 to 5 times (back to back). Today was especially bad. It sounded like the workers were playing honking games and testing out who can be the most annoying noise maker. Perhaps its the car alarms being turned on/off/on/off/on off!! Like, really? I would love to understand why they need to honk so excessively? I don't even understand what they trying to accomplish by honking so much? Is that even necessary?
