Today I went to the Circle Centre location since I was looking for something for Mother's Day, and it was conveniently located as part of the shopping center. I found a carrot cake (which is my mother's favorite) that was at a reasonable price, I asked the gentleman behind the counter if there was something to mark the occasion. He wasn't sure but with a smile, he said that he would see what he could find. He soon came back with a small sign the said Mother's Day on it and placed it on top of the cake. Thia made me happy. He wished me a good day and I left to pick up a bouquet of flowers before paying at the tills. I walked passed several tills and noticed the last till #8 was empty. The other tills had people lined up to pay and I thought it odd that this one had none. I noticed that the #8 sign was illuminated. Now with all the Covid-19 wipe down protocols in place at other stores, I figured that I would double check. I asked the elderly blonde haired lady if she was open for business. She looked up at the illuminated sign and stated "I sure hope so.", in somewhat snarking manner as if I should know better, or that I was perhaps an idiot. I approached the till, said hi, and proceeded to place my items on the counter to be scanned. As she scanned them, she made no eye contact and no pleasant small talk. She gave me the feeling that she would rather serve someone else. Now, I've been in customer service in one capacity or another for over 15 years. I also have been in business for just as long and would never treat any customer like the way I was treated. Aa a front end worker you are the face of the company. What type of experience you provide to a customer dictates how your company brand is perceived. Once a brand is weaked, it can have long-term effects on your bottom line. I'm and confident and assertive individual that doesn't stand for disrespectful behavior. I asked her in an irritated voice if she was having a bad day. To which there was no reply. I explained to her that i thought she had a poor attitude. As before, there was no reply. So, I paid for my items and stopped by the customer service desk on my way out. I explained what had happened to the nice young lady behind the counter and she provided me with a costumer complaint form. At that moment, the elderly lady from till #8 approached the counter. She had followed me there and asked what was wrong as I filled out the complaint forms. I explained to her that I was taking care of the issue and that she should leave. I could see that this put the young lady behind the counter in an awkward situation. I got the feeling the cashier from till #8 realized the error and consequences of her lack luster behavior, as she turned and headed back to her till. I completed filling out the complaint form and handed it to the customer service lady. I asked what would happen next and she explained that the supervisor would review it and contact me. I said thank you and left the store with my items. Now, as a man of colour I would be disappointed if this had anything to do with. It's been my experience, that cancerous employees need to be cut out and discarded as soon as possible. If left, they poison and chip away at company morale and perpetuate bad behavior. This usually starts at the top with out of touch owners, to weak and complacent supervisors, and on downwards.
