Dry eye syndrome is a very common condition. Although aging certainly plays a key role in reducing natural tear production (especially during menopause), dry eye can affect anyone.

Tear film is made up of a mucous layer against the eye, a middle aqueous (water) layer, and an outer lipid (oily) layer. All three components are important to a normal tear film. If any of the three layers of the tear film are deficient or dysfunctional, the eye may suffer symptoms of dry eye.

Complaints of dry eye may include burning, stinging, redness of the eyes and tearing. The reason why tearing can also be a symptom of ocular dryness is because tear film can be unstable like a drop of water in a greasy frying pan and run off the surface instead of sticking to the eye and keeping it wet. In other words ocular dryness is a complex problem and is often multifactorial.

Various conditions causing dry eyes include aging, hormonal changes (menopause), smoking, medications (blood pressure, antihistamines, antidepressants, birth control pills), contact lens wear, previous refractive laser eye surgery, lack of blinking due to conditions like Parkinson's Disease, or prolonged staring at a computer screen.

Treatment depends on the cause and mechanism of the dry eye syndrome which should be first properly diagnosed by an ophthalmologist. Why see a medical specialist for this? That is because many ocular conditions even as seemingly benign as dry eye can be as a result of an undiagnosed or poorly treated underlying medical condition, such as collagen-vascular disease, or other coexistent ocular conditions such as allergies, rosacea or blepharitis. Furthermore, dry eyes can lead to complications leading to visual loss.

Treatment modalities include removal of the cause e.g. changing medication and quitting smoking. Sometimes dietary changes such as increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake (fish and flax seeds), artificial tear replacement drops and punctal occlusion are also helpful. One can also consider obtaining a humidifier, wearing sunglasses in windy conditions and trying to blink more often. More severe cases can be treated with punctum plugs or Cyclosporin A drops.

On my first visit I wasn't quite sure about this doctor but it is a very busy clinic. I needed a small surgery which was fine. We t back a year later for check up. Was pleasantly surprised. Got a very thorough eye exam and talked to the doctor about having cataract surgery. He was very helpful explaining everything . I would recommend this clinic

Absolutely horrific experience. Rude, demeaning, and ignorant. Really disturbing way to treat a patient. I would never ever go to this guy again. There are great eye Drs in this province that are not arrogant and lacking in compassion.

Dr. Bozdech is a very skilled surgeon. He works very quickly and proficiently. He has performed catarct surgery in both of my eyes with fantastic results. He has a great sense of humour in the operating room during surgery which really helps to make the experience much more relaxing. Thank you very much for making my eyesight normal again. I would highly recommend Dr. Bozdech and his staff.

I’d give a minus rating if available. I have to say that this was the absolute worst medical experience I’ve ever experienced and I’m 65 years old. My first and only visit was near the beginning of October when I had the testing and very brief consultation with the doctor who told me I had cataracts and walked out...the end. That’s what my local doctor told me when he referred me. One of his staff showed me a model of an eye and said this is an eye with cataracts and this is one without. That’s all I got from a business that’s going to cut into my eyes! And that took about 2 1/2 hrs. They were to call when surgery is booked. I called them a couple of times in December to see where we were at. I was told that I’d be called when they have a date. They did call on February 17th to tell me that I was booked for surgery in September! In the meanwhile I called a Calgary clinic in January. Got tested and a consultation with the surgeon and booked surgery for the middle of March. All in an hour and a half. And after saying that, I would not trust my health or recommend anyone to this clinic!

Beautiful office. I wish my house looked like this! Very friendly and efficient staff. The numbering system on the entire business complex is not in any particular order which is quite odd.

One star, because the only good thing about this place is the eye doctor. And even he is questionable... He gets two stars. His staff, they only get one. I'm sure my dogs can do a better job behind the counter than they do... At the very least, they would have better customer service lol 2 years after my eye surgery, I'm having eye issues and try going for a scheduled appointment and they reschedule me because of the face mask issue I will admit I didn't want to wear one legit because of medical reasons though. They tried rescheduling me for a month away and I said I'm going blind it's important I see my eye doctor and they thought it was this big joke to play games with me... Finally after about 15 attempts my doctor calls me and apologizes for his staff and says they are just little girls and aren't as professional yet lol The doctor has a little bit of a sense of humor so it made me chuckle, and definitely eased the mood so also because of that he gets two stars. He rescheduled me for the 17th, way before his little girls wanted me to come in. All in all I recommend this doctor but I don't recommend anything else about this business. And now he isn't even finishing surgeries on his patients because of covid, yet all other medical facilities for the most part are in full operation; I can go get glasses, I can go see the dentist... This guy just thinks he's special and can close his doors whenever he wants to... Hopefully you don't need a double eye surgery because who knows when you will get them both done... He's a prankster, so he might just make you work with one eye for a year. And if you're worried about your eye surgery don't be he knows completely what he's doing and it is the most pain-free medical operation you will ever have, I promise!

I've given this review a lot of thought. The way your first appointment is booked is a little frustrating, and the two hour wait could perhaps be communicated a little better, but I honestly feel that Dr. Bozdech is worth the wait. The quality of care I received was top notch, and especially when you're having sharp objects near your eye, you want the best. All of the staff at the clinic were very nice. I would absolutely recommend this clinic to my friends, as long as they remember to bring a good book to read in the waiting room.

Dr. Bozdech is a very busy ophthalmologist but is willing to explain things thoroughly to alleviate patients' concerns. The nurses and staff are wonderful, kind people - very caring and compassionate. Thank you so much again for the migrane spray, it worked really well and gave me relief. May karma bless you all! Much love and thanks, J.
