About Yellowhead Veterinary Clinic

If you do not plan to breed or show your pet, you should consider having it spayed or neutered. There are several important medical behavioural problems that could arise if your pet is left intact.

An un-spayed female dog or cat may develop medical problems:

– Endometritis/Pyometra: A bacterial infection of the uterus, which occurs mainly in older pets.
– Mammary Gland Tumours: The incidence of mammary gland tumours in un-spayed dogs and cats is 7x greater than in spayed animals. The risk of tumour development increases with each heat cycle.

Other problems that may occur:

– Unwanted pregnancies: The S.P.C.A. and pounds are heavily burdened with unwanted and neglected animals because owners are unable to find homes for their kittens and puppies.
– Confinement of your female dog: It would be necessary to keep your dog confined for 21 days while she is in heat to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

An un-spayed female cat may:

– Become quite aggressive
– Become pregnant if allowed outside while in heat
– Attract male cats, which results in male spraying
– Constantly cry to be let outside

An un-neutered male dog may develop reproductive problems:

– Testicular Tumours: These are common in dogs. Neutering eliminates this problem
– Prostatic Problems: The prostate is a gland that surrounds the opening of the urinary bladder. It may become abnormally enlarged, infected, or develop a tumour.

Other problems that may develop:

– Tumours of the Anal Tissue: Hormone-dependant tumours commonly occur in older, intact male dogs
– Un-neutered dogs may become more aggressive and dominant with age
– They tend to wander, which may result in fights and/or road accidents
– Un-neutered dogs tend to mark their territory, sometimes even in the house!

IN ADDITION

Dogs with undescended testicles should be neutered. The incidence of testicular tumours in undescended testicles are 14x greater than in descended testicles. This condition is inherited; therefore these dogs should not be used for breeding.

An un-neutered male cat may:

– Fight for his territory, which leads to scratches, bite wounds, abscesses and consequently more medical expenses
– Have very strong smelling urine, which he may spray in order to mark his territory and attract female cats
– Tend to wander off

The ladies were nice and helpful. The vet was awesome, he got on the ground and got to know the dogs, listened to all my concerns. This vet was recommended to me from a long time client who lost their dog and said they helped the family get through that tough time. prices were reasonable. would definitely recommend!

We have been taking our 2 dogs here for many years. Each time, the staff and veterinarians meet us in such a caring and genuine way. Our dogs are always taken such good care of while they are visiting whether it is for a surgery, dental appointment, or check up. The staff goes beyond to make us humans at ease with leaving our fur babes there. Definitely worth the drive from the city to get such exceptional care!

There is nothing necessarily wrong with their service except for price. I thought I had to have my cat euthanized because I didn't have budget for their services. It's a good thing that the SPCA told me on the line when I was asking to surrender him that I might want to call elsewhere as the Yellowhead Vet Clinic was known to be expensive. I was able to find somewhere else to do the surgery for literally a quarter of the price. I wouldn't be as dissatisfied if they told me that I should try elsewhere before going for euthanasia.

I took my cat poncho here to get him checked out and it turned out that he needed to have some teeth pulled. They had 4 teeth extracted last Monday and he couldn’t be happier. He has been healing so well and when I came home after his surgery he was so happy to see me. They treated poncho was the best care possible and made sure he felt right at home. The cat also said that poncho was such a friendly cat and he was in good hands so I didn’t need to worry. So thank you again for helping my poncho and taking away his discomfort so he can be the happy go lucky cat that I know to be. ?

I take my dogs here if they need medical attention, without hesitation they are my first call. They take the time to explain so you have full understanding, provide options for care/treatment and are diligent with following up, making sure once you are home you have no issues. They make you feel like they care about both you and your pet. Love this place! I had to go back again the other day and they have a new Veterinarian there, Dr. Daryl Meger. Without a doubt, the BEST Veterinarian ever. After seeing him, there is nobody else I want my dogs seeing. The care and level of attention he gives is unlike anyone else. Good on you for bring in a first class doctor to your clinic. Knowing he will be the one looking after my dogs gives both me and my dogs comfort and makes the stress disappear. Saw Dr. Boornenbal today for Benji’s back spasm. Very happy with him, he’s a great veterinarian that shows kindness and care and full of knowledge. I’m very comfortable with him in the event Dr. Meger is unavailable.

They are so responsive and wonderful. Their team is top notch and the prices are very reasonable. They helped my, Millie, get through her pregnancy and with all the pups and continue to work with my dogs, for regular check-ups. One of our pups had Puppy Strangles and they got us in so fast and we sorted everything out and all the pups and Millie are doing great, thanks to all their help. Very professional and knowledgeable.
