About Vanstone Nurseries
David and Eunice Vanstone and their sons Ashley and Owen began with a piece of property in Portage la Prairie. They built a house and a small greenhouse in 1982. To supplement their income, they grew and sold vegetables from the yard. David taught in the Diploma Agriculture program during the winters. Eunice cared for the family as Tim and Jessica were born.
The nursery grew over the years, focused on perennials and shrubs. Greenhouse space increased to 35,000 square feet. Shrubs grow in a field with drainage and automated watering.
Vanstone Nurseries grows for 250+ garden centres from Ontario to Alberta. Plant delivery is an important part of the business. Poor handling, temperature, or timing can damage plants. Vanstone delivers their own product whenever possible.
Owen and Tim have worked in the nursery most of their lives. They have now stepped up to the main leadership responsibilities. Their exciting ideas and energy will move Vanstone Nurseries forward to the new generation. They aspire to make Vanstone a top Manitoba nursery with the best flowers and shrubs possible.
David
David left an ornamental plant research position at the Morden Research Station to start a nursery of his own. His hard work and his wife Eunice’s support have turned the abandoned yard site into a growing nursery.
He is the owner and general manager, particularly interested in the perennial production. David works hard to ensure administrative details are kept in order and everything keeps running smoothly.
Owen
Owen manages the sales and marketing for the nursery. He enjoys interacting with customers to help find solutions for their needs. He oversees the production of container plants and is always interested in finding new plants to grow and better ways to grow them.
Owen also is active in the industry, speaking at industry events and instructing at regional colleges. He has served as a board member for Landscape Manitoba and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and recently completed a four-year term as the chair of Growers Canada. He has embraced the opportunity to see nurseries across the country and around the world and has gained valuable perspective which is utilized to improve Vanstone Nurseries.
Owen was married in July 2012 to Gina and has three children.
Tim
Tim joined the business after earning a diploma in Business Administration at Red River College and has become an integral part of operations. He manages the bulk of the shipping process, oversees the facility and maintenance, and is responsible for the field production.
During the production season, Tim is responsible for the potting process and supervises the ongoing plant care in the container field.
Tim and his wife Olga have three children, Zach, Kyle, and Jane.
