This Jiu Jitsu academy is exceptional. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the door was the atmosphere. The community that everyone at VIBJJ has created is unlike any other. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Jiu Jitsu, and their lessons are filled with technical details you might overlook. The gym is spotless, and the facilities are excellent (there’s even a sauna!). VIBJJ offers outstanding training for beginners and experienced grapplers alike. I came into my first class with no experience and vast amounts of anxiety but left with a hunger for more knowledge and a one-year subscription. VIBJJ is an incredible place with incredible people, so if you are looking to train Jiu Jitsu, look no further.

I started a little over a month ago with no experience in any form of martial arts. I didn't really know what to expect on my first day but the coaches are all incredibly knowledgeable, patient and will walk you through the different techniques being taught every session which I appreciated greatly. Also, the gym itself was absolutely beautiful with the floor and walls completely matted out. They have one end of the room open so there is great airflow going through the gym which was a big plus for me especially with the whole Covid thing. Needless to say I signed up after the first class and I'm so glad I did.

I had been wanting to try Jiu Jitsu for such a long time before I finally took the plunge and went for a couple classes at Van Isle. Jean-Marc has remembered my name since the first day I walked in and introduced myself . I am so glad that I did and I ended up learning from him, Mathew and Will. I was surprisingly intimidated my first few classes but before long I couldn't wait for the next class and they have now started to seem too short, I just want more! The environment is very friendly with many of the regular folks introducing themselves to me and making me feel welcome. I can't recommend trying Jiu Jitsu enough and Van Isl has been a great place for me to start out. Being a total newbie I don't have anything to compare them to but its been a truly great experience so far, I am hooked. My partner commented after just 4 classes how she could already she my body changing. Fitness was definitely a major reason I was interested in the first place and now instead of dreading going to the gym and checking the clock while I am there I can't wait for class and its over too fast. UPDATE, its been 3 years and I am still going regularly and loving it!

I am apart of the Royal Canadian Navy, and I was sent to Esquimalt to complete my trades course for two months. During that time, Co-Owner/Instructor Jean-Marc invited me and made me feel welcome during the awkward first days of Jiu-Jitsu, while I was clueless on all base skills required to build upon. What allowed me to succed was the style of teaching, where each step is preformed many times in basic steps for understanding of all levels. Immediatly they allow us to practice with each other, combining visual and physical lessons into the practice. learning is quick and most of the time intuitive. The teaching is phenomenal, and one rule they stress is to tap when you feel pressure, not when you start to hurt. The instructors and the teaching is not the only thing to keep an eye out for, as the students are also incredible people. While we learned as a class, I was able to talk and learn about peoples lives while we where trying different strangles on each other. (not as bad as it sounds) After class I would sometimes go to the electric spa where we would talk about nonsense, or life, what was next for us and our plans. I am sad that I had to leave so quickly. I really do wish that I could have more time and experience there. I swear it was worth every cent.

Signed up for the year 4 months ago and haven’t looked back since. I was a soft 205 pounds when I started at van isle and I’m already down 20 pounds from going 2-4 times a week. The facility is top notch, The Matt’s are soft, sauna and showers on site. There is a variety of class types and times. Gi, no gi, self defence, sport jiu jitsu, competition class, women’s only and kids. The classes themselves are challenging and relevant for self defence. The coaches want you to succeed and from my experience are happy to take the extra time to teach you if you’re on the Matt’s. If you don’t like doing sit ups. Join jiu jitsu.

Great atmosphere, and a great place to learn! Hard to build a solid culture in a martial arts gym, and these guys have done it. If you're wanting to try out BJJ for the first time, don't hesitate to try them out!

I have been attending since about mid August 2021 and have been waiting a bit to write a review. Nothing but good things to say. BJJ has completely changed my life over the past 6 months both mentally and physically. Very welcoming place I have never once felt like I didn't belong there even from day 1. It is a great environment and I was naturally a bit intimidated when I first especially when you first start training with high belts however not one of them every felt like they were better than anyone else at the gym (no egos). Thanks to JM, Will, Dave, Max, Steph, Afton (sorry I know I missed some).

Been attending for a few months now and absolutely love it here! The gym is clean and well-maintained, and the energy is fantastic. There's a lot of classes throughout the week so I'm able to make classes despite my schedule. The instructors are fantastic - helpful, knowledgeable, respectful and patient. It's a good environment to learn --especially if you have no martial arts background. I also really appreciate that it's a safe and comfortable space with diverse students and coaches! Great place for a new hobby that keeps you fit and develops confidence!
