I tried to privately offer a constructive criticism for the organizers to modify the course description to avoid others having the same feelings as my own. It was met with a condescending email and phone conversation. I would more accurately describe this course as a personal mentorship for artists who already have a character or book idea developed. There is no real preparation for each class, but rather time scheduled to "work on your own projects." I do not feel it met the course description's deliverables of: Learn what publishers look for in illustrations, and/or the different genres that appeal to children. My recommendation is to save your $195 and purchase the textbook recommended: Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market. I am saddened by the level of customer service offered by State of the Art Supplies because I have enjoyed a course offered by another instructor in the past. I hope they read this review and do not take it personally -- rather listen with a grain of salt and try to prevent future disappointments.

First time I walked into the store I was given freedom to roam around, ask for help when needed and be educated with some great conversation along the way. For someone who had little idea of what to look for, I was given the proper attention needed and was not oversold. The second time I walked in, they actually remembered who I was and carried a conversation with how my purchase was treating me, which shows their attentiveness to their customers. Very impressed, will shop there again.

I have had wonderful transactions with the staff who have been helpful at pinpointing exactly what item is better from an excellent selection. I have had neutral experiences where it was not fabulous but it was not horrible. Finally, I recommend this shop to family because of my previous success finding items difficult to find or for a more reasonable price. Unfortunately their experience was quite poor. They came in looking for a specific item as I tend to do myself and voiced that the item recommended might not be the right one. There was no return policy explained and none noted on the receipt. My family checked the item further to corroborate the information on the label to the item they were needing and it was the incorrect item. When back in town, within the 7 day period that you would expect is the smallest allowable return policy (many of the competitors offer 14 days to 30 days), the store attendant only allowed for a store credit. Within the next few days, I cashed the store credit finding what I required and had a satisfactory experience but felt some tension when cashing the store credit. Understandably, I now have mixed feelings towards this store. The return policy is lousy so that discourages any purchase that I am not 100% certain is the correct item which is not comforting to someone who can shop elsewhere with little hassle in returns or exchanges.
