Prairie Rose Cottage - Orton

This is us:
We (John & Jacquelien) are a couple who loves the Alberta prairies and quiet country living. We’ve been happily married for 30 years. We have 5 children and four grandchildren.

Prairie Rose Cottage was born out of a dream to provide a comfortable guest house for our parents. As a young family, we moved 1,200 kms away from my parents in the year 2000. Of course, Opa and Oma missed their children and grandchildren. Fortunately, they were able to visit regularly, but our house was very small. We wanted them to have their own space for their privacy and comfort.

In 2010 I (Jacquelien) found the unfinished building while browsing Kijiji. My husband John is a very skilled and creative carpenter and together we enjoyed this fun project of designing and building the cozy cabin! My parents loved the end result and they spent many weeks visiting at all different times of the year. The kids have enjoyed many sleepovers at the cabin as well. Unfortunately, my mom was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2019. They still came to visit a couple of times, but preferred to stay in our house, where mom could receive more care.

This brought us to the idea of opening up the cabin to hosting others. We loved the idea of giving guests the opportunity for a vacation getaway. This is truly one of the most beautiful and unique corners of the world, where the prairies and Rocky Mountains meet. We love offering the opportunity of a relaxing and quiet getaway close to so many beautiful attractions in Southern Alberta. We are thrilled by the response our cabin has received and now we welcome guests from all parts of the world. Thank you to all of our previous visitors and we look forward to welcoming many more guests in the future!

Update: Sadly, Mom passed away in November of 2020. We miss her so much! But we believe that she would be happy that many others continue to enjoy “het kleine huisje” – the little house.
