★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Palfreyville Apartments were built in 1911, at a time of significant growth and residential construction in Calgary prior to WW1 and is a rare and atypical example of semi-detached residential design of the period. The double residence design responded to the critical need for housing in the primarily working-class neighbourhood of Hillhurst-Sunnyside. William James Palfrey was an active developer and home builder in Sunnyside, building at least 13 frame dwellings during the years 1909 to 1911, prior to the construction of Palfreyville Apartments. It is evident that he developed this property with the intention of renting it out, since the property was never subdivided. Palfrey had developed a couple of other properties in Sunnyside with the same intent, such as the duplexes at 112 and 120 9 Street NW (1910). Palfrey's development activities reflect his entrepreneurial character and his efforts to take advantage of the huge demand for housing during the 1909-12 boom. The Palfreyville Apartments may have been named as a tongue-in-cheek' way indicating Palfrey's aspirations to develop so many buildings in the area that the area would be dubbed Palfreyville', With the economy going into deep decline by 1913 his subsequent development activities were diminished.
