About Numchok Wilai Restaurant

To define Thai cuisine is difficult. It is more apropos perhaps to state what is a blending and all amalgam of this cuisine with more than a trace of other ethnic represented as well.

In Thai, dinner invitation translates to come and eat rice. Virtually all dishes are served with rice and primary aim of a thoughtful Thai cook is to present a meal which is rich in contrast, in texture, flavor, color, shape, aroma, and aftertaste all served against a background of the main dish rice.

To order a typically Thai dinner, rice is the centerpiece of any Thai dinner. Surrounding the rice would be four or five dishes depending on the number of diners and the elaborateness of the household. These side dishes could include fish, meat, vegetables, and a salad or noodle dish.

You would take rice on your plate or soup dish and make your own selections from the dishes arranged around the rice one at a time. The idea is for you to combine each flavor or sauce with your choice of fish or meat mix it with rice, alternate with soup or fresh vegetables and each whatever you will, until you are satisfied.

Food was awesome, we were a group of four and we tried each other's dishes, there wasn't a bad bite. Service was really good, the waiter took his time and explained to us the food on the menu. We do recommend this place and we will be going back for sure.

My first time trying, and I'll absolutely be back! Great set up in place for pick up orders, as they can't have guests inside. The food was delish! Tried a couple of the curries and they were perfectly spicy.

Amazing food. Not quite like any other Thai places we've been to. The owner is a friendly guy. We're in town from Yellowknife and have added this place as a must-visit on future trips to Edmonton. Yum. Yu. Yum.

Not impressed. I want to give this at least 3 stars but I can't force it. I have been here several times and it's been hit or miss, but lately miss. After ordering take out and excitedly speeding home to eat as this was a special treat for my wife and I, disappointment quickly set in after opening our containers..... I ordered a green chicken curry, red beef curry, chicken pad thai and som tum salad. The curries were bland, almost watery with the exception of the red. I ordered this extra hot and it had a slight tickle of heat, almost enough that a 4 year old might have some discomfort. I've had a spicier flamethrower burger at Dairy Queen. The meat portions were pathetic and made me second guess my order thinking they were vegetarian as they consisted of at least 95% bamboo shoots. At $17 a pop this was not a worthwhile choice. Same deal with the pad thai, lacked flavour and the noodles looked pale and sad. Im not sure if they even hit the wok with any sauce before packing. Again, not worth the $17. The som tum salad was decent, flavourful and had some heat. Probably the best dish of the night which is still not worth $14. The last time I paid for a salad over $15, the greens were flattened with a whole grilled chicken breast, garnished with tiger prawns! Moral of the story, put some effort, quality ingredients and consistency into your food if you plan to charge these prices. Next time I plan to splurge and treat myself, I will consider elsewhere.

Always good food, and friendly staff. Been our favorite Thai restaurant for almost 10 years.

I'm reminded why it's worth driving the extra ten min. Haven't eaten here for a long time because of the pandemic. I forgot what I was missing. My wife and I ate here again recently and I was reminded what I've been missing. We both had red curry. Mine was beef, she got the tofu. There was lots of veggies and beef in mine, much more than other places in my opinion. And the veggies still had just a little crunch still. Just right. The beef was tender and flavourful. The curry itself was just right, sweet, creamy, very flavorful, with a hint of freshness at the end often lacking in other places. The tofu curry was the same, with nice chunks of tofu. It was enjoyably spicy, without the threat of a later revenge, however I have ordered extra spicy before, and been rewarded with a true extra spicy (amazing when I'm in the mood for it). The coconut rice here is also always spot on. Thanks Numchuk. See you soon.

Numchok is one of the best Thai places to go to. Excellent service, welcoming servers and generous portions on the food you order! And get the dessert, the mango is delicious. This has been a staple of ours throughout the years and definitely recommend you also check them out!
