Mastered Home Renovations - Calgary

Run, do not walk away from this contractor! Alain Duval completed a major house renovation for us. We were extremely disappointed with him for the following reasons: Before we signed a contract, he said the amount he quoted in his set price contract would be the final cost to us. But, a month in he asked for another $12380.00 as the basement demolition had revealed additional work would be necessary. We gave him the money. A month after that, a text message from him read, "We had a building inspection this last Monday and this guy requires extra new things to ad (sic) on, consequently more cost." When we looked more closely we determined the inspector had required smoke detectors in each bedroom. (These were never installed.) As it turned out, Mr. Duval was using the inspection as a ploy to get more money for items previously included in the $12380.00 or the original contract. We did not give him the additional money. When we refused to give him more money without receipts he became surly and short with us. He installed a mictowave hood fan so high it would have been a safety hazard to use. He argued it had been installed "according to code." We checked and ultimately he lowered it. He did not make our job a priority but went off to work on another project. Our contract stated the project would be completed in 11 - 13 weeks. It took Mr. Duval 21 weeks to complete our renovation. The contract stated, "The worksite would be cleaned to customer standards on termination of project." In fact, we had to have the furnace and ducts cleaned and were told by Fagnans (the company we hired) that the contractor had swept or dropped a lot of shavings and debris into the ducts. Is this appropriate business practice? When we received our final invoice additional expenses were included that we had not approved. Two days later Mr. Duval placed a Builder's Lien on the property as he knew we planned to sell. We did sell and paid the additional amount so that the lien would be removed and we could transfer title. The cost to us was greater to dispute the amount and disrupt the sale then to pay Mr. Duval. Is this an ethical way to do business? There are many other examples we could provide but space is short and we cannot list them all.

Despite the many challenges that Covid threw at MHR, they always rose to the challenge and communicated clearly and promptly. The entire MHR team was always courteous and professional when at our home working on the renos. The quality of workmanship is nothing short of perfection which is what MHR expects and delivers. They kept the work areas extremely clean at all times and always accommodated us as we were working from home during the renos. We are super happy with the finished results and with the follow up that MHR does to ensure everything is good and that we are happy. I highly recommend using Mastered Home Renovations and will definitely give them a call for our next project!!

Mastered Home Renovations went above what we asked for entire home renovation. Every room was transformed beautifully, better than the designs they showed us and within budget! The Mastered team did an incredible job updating our bathrooms in the house as well as a few odd jobs around the house. There was nothing that was out of their expertise and they were very good at making solutions to our household Reno problems. What stood out the most was how communicative that were throughout the entire process. All of their workers were very punctual, clean and were extremely transparent with their assessments on what needs to be done while still valuing my input and my vision for how I wanted the bathrooms to look. Alain Duval managed the entire project from start to finish and was very knowledgeable and experienced.
