As far as financing strategies go, the one that Nathan Baldry and his partners used to get his business started certainly qualifies as unconventional. Using a $5,000 line of credit and a no-interest, no-down-payment credit card from Best Buy, they bought the equipment they needed to start Liberty Security Systems.

“We were raised with the idea of not having any debt, so we wanted to have as little debt as possible with as few obligations as possible. We could have gone to parents or aunts and uncles, but we felt like we wanted to do it on our own,” says Baldry.
Eleven-and-a-half months later, he says, they paid off the balance on that Best Buy credit card, and the business was up and running.

It was no coincidence that Baldry made his first major purchase for the company at a Best Buy. He wanted to build a business that offered more than just the usual array of key codes and sirens, and today Liberty embraces a technology-first approach to home security. That means clients have access to a whole range of high-tech goodies, from live-streaming security cameras to the ability to activate and deactivate alarms and appliances from hundreds of kilometres away through a smart phone. It’s a concept that Liberty calls home automation, and it has become the key selling point for the company.

Russell Keddie, one of Liberty’s managing partners, thinks the company’s decision to empower customers is the key to its success.

“The traditional customer service model is that you have people on phones and somebody calls in,” Keddie says. “The new model for customer service is giving them the power themselves. They can get notifications to their Smart Phone through text message or email, or push notifications.” The notifications can include a low battery, power outage, an alarm event – basically anything going on with the system. “That way they can know what’s going on. It puts the power in the customers’ hands, streamlines our business and gives the customers better services.”

Liberty continues to push forward with its innovative and technologically-oriented approach to home and commercial security. In fact, says Pat Kickham, the company’s director of business development, Liberty barely resembles a conventional security company.

“People think of burglar alarm companies as door contacts, motion sensors and an alarm,” he says. “We do that, but it’s becoming a fragment of our business now. Our systems become a gateway into the home.” Clients can now arm the system as they wish, control the thermostat and turn the lights on and off. “There are an infinite number of applications for our services,” he continues. “Some customer will think of something next week and come to us, ask us about it, and we will figure out a way to make it work.”

An ability to find solutions to customer demands stems in part from the company’s embrace of cloud technology. Avoiding traditional landline infrastructure and integrating cellular systems in their place allows Liberty to deliver data to the user whenever they need it, not just when an alarm is going off. The impact goes beyond a simple phone call, too. For example, Liberty’s high-tech set-up allows it to notify parents with a text message when their son gets home from school, or a business owner with an email that tells him how many customers entered his store on a particular day.

Another company edge results from its refusal to outsource services. In an industry where most companies are based outside of Canada or outsource services to a network of international dealers and call centres, Liberty stands apart. By building strong relationships within the relatively small geographical region it operates in, Liberty uses local knowledge to reach customer service goals and differentiate itself from the competition.

Keddie says Liberty’s open-minded approach to new technology isn’t a gimmick. The services it offers can, he says, mean the difference between life and death for their clients. Keddie recalls a recent story in which a customer had a stroke, but managed to hit the emergency button on her security system before she passed out.

“The ambulance was dispatched, they got her to the hospital and thank goodness everything turned out all right for her,” he says. “If she didn’t have that system, who knows what would have happened? Those are the things that make me happy about what we do.”

Highly recommend Liberty Securities. Landon helped me setup the account, and he was very understanding of my requirements. Made the entire process super quick and easy. Ronnie (Technician) was the one who installed the system. Ronnie is also very knowledgable with camera angles and understanding of best places for trip wires. One of the triggers did happen to malfunction and Ronnie came back right away to fix the minor bug. My entire experience with Liberty was very smooth, and I'm very happy with the customer service experience provided.

Hands down worst customer service we have ever received. The sales person did a hell of a job selling the service and after that it went down hill. The gentlemen that installed our equipment was in a rush and did an extremely horrible job. Nothing works properly. To address our concerns we first talked to customer service where the lady ended up yelling at my husband. After that we spoke with the customer service manager she claims she β€œwanted to work with us” and has now stopped replying to our emails. If you are thinking about getting this company I would highly not recommend. Very disappointed.

Liberty Security Calgary dispatched Adrian Cotter to perform a service call and also to rectify some installation challenges from a previous install. For perspective this is a 6000' home with a complex system . Adrian was prompt, efficient, well informed and made sure I was as equally informed of what was being done and the solutions being provided. Adrian did an excellent job of servicing our needs.

If I could give negative stars I would give Negative 100 to Liberty. The fact that I see some positive reviews for this company is completely astonishing. I wouldn’t recommend this company to anyone and if you do have issues good luck dealing with customer service. After weeks of dealing with Melissa I paid $1400 of funds I didn’t have just to never deal with this company again. First you deal with service techs who cancel and no show and then show up and do a half a$$ job appearing to be under the influence. Then you have poor quality products, in my set up I had A doorbell camera that records people leaving not arriving, thermostat that shuts heat off on its own and a lock that batteries don’t last longer then a month. Then dealing with customer service first I was dealing with Chelsea, who was literally yelling at me over the phone and then the manager Melissa who was just a polite version of useless. There’s lots of security companies my only advice would be to move on and keep looking before dealing with Liberty.

After long time looking for a Security Company, I finally got Liberty, so many neighbours recommend me to get Liberty Security. Landon Orr was awesome, after a friend gave me her number and contact him, was so friendly very responsive and patience with all my questions ( a lot I asked) after I told what I need, He get me the lowest monthly payments possible with the lowest amount at front, for all the equipment I request, and this was for real the best price on market, I had quoted with different providers and prices were crazy with less equipment, a lot of money and front and highest monthly payments. Landon came to my house for a consultation he was so knowledgeable and easy to deal with him, after 2 days we got our system installed, our technical Kevin was so friendly, very professional and spent many hours in details to get all system running perfectly. Head office people also amazing with all the final details, best experience from beginning to end, amazing staff, perfect services and the best of all it’s a local company! -amazing rates, I got all I was looking for at the best price at the market -amazing staff and service Landon Orr the best representative to deal with! Thanks for all you help!

Liberty is awesome. I recently had my doorbell camera updated. Adrian came out and did the installation. He is so awesome. He always goes beyond what is needed and is just an awesome guy. I actually ask for him personally anytime I need service cuz he is amazing and hes got a really awesome accent! ? Thank you again Adrian.

I'm very impressed with Liberty Security. I wasn't looking for a new security company, but decided to try them as part of an affiliate package deal. The security company I was using at the time (from a Canadian mobile provider) seemed fine enough, but it wasn't until I went with Liberty that I learned what I was missing. Liberty's hardware, software, and service are all far better than what I had previously. Their support staff is responsive and fast, and the system is very reliable. I encountered a number of outages with the last company, and sometimes when I accidentally set of my alarm, they didn't even respond, making me wonder what would happen in a real scenario. Liberty is always extremely responsive. Highly recommended.

Liberty offers not only great and affordable home security system , but an outstanding customer service. I recently made a move from northern to southern Alberta and my service was reconnected and followed through by Rebecca. From the moment of disconnect to arranging removal of services to my previous home up to the time to connect to my new permanent home (3 month follow up). Rebecca showed high professionalism, speedy support and an innate patience for the challenges and demands we faced (due to my lack of planning). I would like to recognize her guidance and support throughout my moving process.
