About Leon's Furniture

Over 100 Years and Growing

Founded in 1909 by Ablan Leon, the A. Leon Company started out as a general merchandise store in the small town of Welland in Southern Ontario. Today Leon's is one of Canada's largest retailers, selling a wide range of merchandise including furniture, major appliances and home electronics across multiple banners. The company continues to be run by the Leon family and maintains the standards of service, integrity and dedication established by Ablan Leon over 100 years ago. Leon’s Furniture Limited is proud to employ over 10,000 associates within our network of corporate and franchise stores throughout Canada.

Our History

Canada's Gain

At the turn of the century, a young Ablan Leon left his native land to seek his fortune. After a few years of extensive travel throughout South America and the United States, he settled into the small town of Welland in Southern Ontario. The largest town on the Welland Canal was a busy and prosperous one with large ships passing through the canal, connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Mr. Leon began his career by selling clothing from a suitcase door-to-door. After saving enough of his hard-earned profit, he bought a small building in the working class area of town and The A. Leon Company was born in 1909. Merchandise such as pants, blankets, shoes, linens and other soft goods, were sold at a fair price to his growing list of customers. The Company quickly established its reputation for being honest, honourable and caring with special attention paid to standing behind the goods sold.

A Helping Hand

In the early 1900s, immigration levels were steadily rising and many of these new Canadians had difficulty obtaining credit of any kind. One particular policy that enabled the store's reputation to grow, was to provide credit to customers who were unable to receive it elsewhere. This endeared Mr. Leon to a growing number of loyal customers.

Once he was on sure footing with his new venture, Mr. Leon went back to his native land to take a bride, Lena. Ablan brought Lena to Welland and they started their family of 11 children. It was evident to everyone who dealt with this family, that Christian ideals such as kindness, humility, and a general concern for others were deeply ingrained in their daily lives.

As the children grew, they worked in the store dusting the furniture, sweeping the floors, or washing the front picture windows.

The Accidental Shopper

When Ablan's son was to be married, he decided to purchase the couple a mattress from a local department store. When the mattress was delivered, it was leaned against the store's outside wall. Soon after, someone came into the store wanting to buy it. Because it wouldn't be needed immediately by his son, Ablan added a few dollars to his cost and sold the mattress. Considering that most of his sales provided only pennies in profit, he was amazed how much could be made on larger items. The rest, they say, is history.

A Family Affair

When Ablan Leon died in 1942, the operation of his now thriving business became the responsibility of his children. Brothers and sisters worked diligently to continue the legacy left by their father. As sales grew, additions were put on the store to accommodate a bigger selection of merchandise.

Eventually it became apparent that in order to grow even further, the business had to expand to other centres. Soon, stores began appearing throughout Southern Ontario, all bearing the Leon's name.

The reputation of Leon's as an honest, reputable retailer who provided quality merchandise at low prices became more and more ingrained in the minds of customers.

Expanding Across Canada

Taking on Toronto

The largest city in Canada provided great potential for further expansion. Rather than open their own stores, the family strategically decided to purchase the business of an existing retailer with a good reputation. They felt this was the best way to break into this highly competitive market in order to learn the intricacies of retail.

After a few years of learning the ropes, Toronto stores were opened under the Leon's name. The family was fortunate to have associates in all their stores who were dedicated to the success of this growing organization, while it worked through many challenges. Leon's Toronto stores soon became synonymous with great values on a gigantic selection of brand name merchandise.

Leon's Brings "Big Box" to Canada

It became clear that to capitalize on Leon's growing presence, a new wave of expansion was logical. This would require a significant injection of capital. In 1969, Leon's Furniture went public and was listed on The Toronto Stock Exchange. The family retained the majority ownership of the shares while individuals as well as institutions, all well aware of the Company's growing reputation, snapped up the balance.

In 1973, Leon's opened the first warehouse showroom in all of Canada. This massive 150,000-square-foot building was the first example of "big box" retailing in the country. For the first time ever, customers had access to a multi-million dollar inventory that prevented long delays in obtaining their purchase. This bold new retail initiative was promoted heavily on television through a series of commercials, including one that used a helicopter to show off the immense size of the store. The buying public accepted this radical new approach with open arms and the Company began erecting huge new showrooms across Canada.

We purchased a chair online. It took 3 months to arrive so in the meantime we purchased other furniture. After it arrived the chair no longer fit in the room. We called to see what could be done and if we could return the item. No one ever returned our calls. I would NOT recommend purchasing anything from them.

Shopped at the Cross Iron store and we were expecting at least a 4 to 6 month wait especially because we wanted a specialty colour. The couch we wanted was in stock in Toronto and we were told we could have it in 3 weeks. It's now 8 DAYS since purchase and I am sitting on it writing this review. Non pushy sales from Silpan, and friendly customer service when paying the bill and booking delivery in store. The delivery was extremely easy and professional. These guys did everything they said and more.

Leon’s Calgary…. The sales guys was great to deal with. Very professional and provided answers for all our questions. He kept in contact with us while we waited for our furniture and responded same day for any voicemails we left. The delivery guys were fabulous. Even a little early. Kept in contact the whole time so we knew when they were coming. They were friendly and professional. Great experience all around. Will recommend Leon’s to all friends and family.

Very unhappy with Leon’s, would only give them one star because the lady that helped pick out furniture was very nice. We have received damaged furniture from Leon’s multiple times. We ordered a lot of furniture from them in March 2021. The kitchen table came within a few months but was damaged and had to be replaced. Our couch came a few months later, one section of the couch was damaged in the delivery truck and needed to be replaced, it’s been over 6 months waiting for the replaced piece. I am worried once we get it it will stand out so much from the rest of the couch. We have been waiting 11 months for 2 accent chairs. Every time I call I am told they will be coming in 2 months but that keeps getting pushed back every time. I’ve worked in costumer service for years and you don’t just make excuses, you do something to make sure that costumer is happy. I have never waited this long for furniture in my life. Leon’s has done nothing to make sure I will return as a costumer or to make sure we are happy.

Frank is by far the best sales rep! He is knowledgeable, charismatic, enjoyable and it is clear he tries to determine your exact likes and dislikes to assist in your purchase. Frank was not pushy and gave me and my family space when we needed some discussion time! He was easy to find and always ready to answer questions when we needed it :) THANK YOU SO MUCH FRANK, - Also , so happy my furniture showed up a few months early :) !!!!!

I bought a couple of recliners from here a few months ago. The service was good but the quality is not. I did get these chairs half off which was nice but i think they're barely worth that. I wouldn't pay the full $1,200 for a chair that is wobbly and flexes around if you slightly move. One chair lays back way too easy to the point you're either laying down or sitting up and the other one you have to have muscles of the hulk to lay back or to push the foot rest back in. Customer service gets 5 star and the quality gets 3 So I'll give them a 4 lol

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Leon's (11 St SE). MD (Mohammed) did a great job with helping us purchase a couch. He was pleasant and attentive to our needs. He didn't rush us and he was patient with answering all of our questions. Very nice location. Place looks clean and not busy. Very happy with our purchase ?

I really wanted to give Leon's 5 stars but my experience wasn't perfect, an argument could be made for 3 stars. First let me say that Joseph is fantastic. Attentive to my needs and didn't try to pull the usual "sales rep trying to sell you everything" approach that so many others would and which I personally hate dealing with. His support throughout my experience is really what is saving this review and bumping it from a 3 to a 4. I purchased a reclining sofa from Leon's and due to shipping delays it took a month or so to get delivered which I was prepared for. The delivery guys were good and friendly after that is when things started going downhill. I was told by Joseph about Leon's price match policy so I kept an eye on that over the holidays prior to delivery and discovered that a deal was taking place right after I purchased the couch. I spoke with Joseph who gave me instructions to get the price match which was to call the store and get it done. The store agreed to the price match but told me I had to wait until the delivery was processed and then they would do it. Delivery came and went and still no refund on the price match. Joseph kept updating me and said it was being processed but nothing ever happened. He finally told me to call the store again to get it sorted out which I did which was frustrating after 2 weeks of back and forth. The guy on the phone said he would submit the request that was supposed to already and that I was told was already submitted. Then about 3 more days later I got a call from a lady doing the refund and she confirmed it was finally done. Today my refund finally cleared on my credit card. Honestly this store needs to fix their model for refunds/price match because if it wasn't for me chasing after everyone multiple times I highly doubt it would have happened and it took weeks to sort out which left a pretty sour taste in my mouth as a result.
