La Place Marie

Not the most beautiful building around the neighbourhood but a bit cheaper.

The fact that they ask you to come and visit a cheap unit but don’t tell you that there are plans to demolish this building makes you think that the humanity is lost! Check the news

I've been a tenant here since 2015 and my experience in the building has been very good. With 267 units it's understandable that different areas of the building might have different issues, and different tenants might have different experiences. For my wife and I, dealing with the superintendent (who has been named in other reviews) has always been a quick and professional experience. We have only needed to make three service calls in the time we've lived here, and each was addressed within a few hours or the next day, either by her husband who is nice (if a bit shy) or the live-in team who cares for the building and grounds. La Place Marie (funny how Google auto-translates it to 'The') was built in 1965 I believe, so certain things are very high quality, like the thick concrete walls which surround each unit. The central air conditioning is a serious plus, and the heating is adequate, not fantastic - but all within the requirements as far as minimum temps go. The single issue that stands out for us is that the hot water can take up to 4 minutes to come to temperature, but we've been instructed that this is how the building is and we need to run the tap if we want hot water. These are some of the tradeoffs of living in an older building I suppose - but it doesn't feel right so it brings the building firmly into 4-star territory. The electricity and Fibe internet have been very stable though - no power-outs I can recall. The security staff at night is also a welcome touch. They rotate a small group of gentlemen who are all nice and do a good job of keeping the building safe. One of them is particularly eccentric and dedicated to his job - any tenant will tell you they sleep a little more sound when he's on watch because he's chasing away even the pigeons! Anyways, I like this little home - it's been really solid living here and any issues that have come up in the common areas have been resolved without us needing to make any noise about them. And I understand how some folks who need a little more hand holding or want a more 'premium' experience could get frustrated with the curt management style. I think they are doing a good job and making an honest effort, and I'm happy to be a resident of this big white V on St. Mary Street...

I currently live here and it's currently great but I'm leaving a 1 star review to deter people from moving here for a valid reason renters should know about. They are planning to demolish this building in two years so unless you are keen to get kicked out in two years, don't bother.
