Independent City Market

This is the reason I refuse to enter this city market again. Today at 10am, Thursday morning I decided to grab dish soap on my way to work in the financial district. I have lived in this area for years. I am heavily pregnant. As I went to check out at a self serve station, note there is NO one next to me or in line, the city market representative decides to HOVER over me, totally ignoring the social distancing rules and watching everything I am doing while I am checking out. I had one item, and used my apple tap to pay phone which also had my optimum points card on it, she turns away for on moment, I grab my bag and receipt. Then she stands right in my path to leave the store, and says to me, word for word, ‘how about next time you pay for your bag’. I am in shock at this point. I pull out the receipt and show her, exactly where I paid the 5 cents for my bag, and said shame on you for accusing me of stealing. Mind you I am the only person of color in this store. I immediately ask to speak to the manager, Marcello comes out and now I am in tears, pregnant, and feel humiliated about this unfair and uncalled for accusation. I explain to him, how I choose to go to CityMarket to pay $4 for a bottle of soap, not to be treated like a thief at 10am in the morning on a working week. This was unacceptable behavior from her, which I later found out her name was LORI. Marcello apologized but nothing can make this better at this point. I am a successful professional, a soon to be mother and I rely on local grocery stores to feel welcomed and not discriminated against, nor completely disrespecting the pandemic government rules of 6 feet apart. At that very moment I point out to Marcello to look at the self serve line, all Caucasian decent, and she, Lori, is no where near them. This is unfair and should be not tolerated at any business, let alone in Canada a hub for multi culturalism. This should be a learning moment for the whole company, I urge you to review the video and see this unforgivable behavior. She never even apologized, I left saying thank you to Marcello and let Lori know, shame on you for your behavior this morning. You have lost a client for life because of this and I still feel sick to my stomach for having to experience racism for the first time in my whole life of being born and raised in Canada, at 10am at a grocery store. I pray this never happens to anyone again, and this is the reason I am taking time out of my day to share this story.

Very fresh produce. Kinda small but has all the necessities crammed into this store. Staff is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Prices however tend to be on the higher side but overall decent

Open during the holidays. Small. Great location. But it is expensive.

Prices tend to be more elevated and selection is limited (likely because of the small size of the store, located at the base of a condo). This store appeals to those who seek convenience. The staff is generally quite helpful.

I wish they had a better vegetarian selection in the freezer section.

Great for convenience but I find they don't track expiry dates on products frequently enough.

Overpriced shelf grocery but the hot table serves delicious fresh food with great customer service!

The prices here are absolutely insane. It’s worth the extra 5 minute walk to the Metro or Longos in Liberty. Everything is overpriced (just recently bought 2 bell peppers, totalled $6), you’re not seeing these prices at any other grocery store within a 2km radius. I will not continue going here, not even for the convenience of living in the apartments above.
