About Howling Dog Tours

Celebrating 25 years in business, they started their dog mushing career on the sprint racing circuit in Western Canada. Since 1989, they have participated in many competitive events, ranging from 4 to 150 mile races. They’ve raced throughout western Canada, and after living in Yellowknife, NWT, for 4 years, settled in Canmore, which has been the base of their mushing operations since 1995.

Howling Dog Tours is a family operation; Rich and Dana believe that everyone should experience the thrill of a dog sled racing team and the pristine beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Their two daughters, Karly and Sara, born and raised in Canmore, are an integral part of the team, either guiding or providing excellent care for our sled dog family.

Do NOT purchase a gift certificate! I had a tour booked at the end of the season using a gift certificate I got for Christmas but very sadly tested positive for Covid so had to cancel. While I appreciate this isn't Howling Dog's problem I did cancel well within 72 hours notice. If we had paid for the tour by any other means they would issue a refund but not with a gift certificate? That makes no sense. To be fair, they did offer to extend my gift certificate to next season however, that is a LOT of money to possibly lose. It says right on their website 'our business is on a permit that is renewed annually, at the discretion of the government.' I can understand no refund if we had just canceled but I'm legally not allowed to go and we did our due diligence to keep people safe by not going. I'm now out $700 and no Christmas present. I feel like I've been stolen from.

Enjoyed our guided experience with Pablo today. He was a professional and pleasant guide and enriched our experience. The trail is a beautiful trek through the mountains and the opportunity to assist with the mushing was an awesome experience. Thanks to the professional staff at Howling Dogs and especially to Pablo who is an awesome person with a love of dogs. Kudos also to Dusty, our driver from Canmore to the Spray Lake and return, a pleasant guide who was happy to share his knowledge and experience of the area.

This was a great experience. So glad we got to go. First the mushers love there pack of dogs. They are informative and know so much about each dog. I was super impressed. We went at 2 pm on a Saturday and I feel that was perfect time. When the sun goes down it gets a bit chilly. The sled was comfortable and the views amazing. Would go again

We took our kids for a "true Canadian experience" in Banff. It was so much fun! The kids got to help harness up the dogs , and could even help drive (with a musher, of course) if they wanted to. All of the dogs are rescue dogs, so some are mixed breeds and don't all look like your "typical" husky sled dogs... but I loved that about them because they are giving these dogs a forever home and a purpose. The dogs all looked very well cared for and you could tell they absolutely loved what they did. The whole family loved the experience. Thank you, Howling Dog Tours, for an experience we'll never forget!

We had the MOST amazing time on this tour through the mountains with the MOST incredible dogs. We were more than impressed with how well the entire staff treats each animal. The dogs love to run, and their job. It was truly wonderful getting to enjoy these incredible views, get to understand the sport of mushing, learning how the dogs are taken care of, and getting to interact with each animal on our tour. We did the 2 hour tour and stopped halfway for cookies and hot chocolate, getting to walk down to see the frozen lake and spectacular views. Our guide was very knowledgable and could tell you the personality, likes, dislikes, nature, and besties of each dog on his two teams. Our guide (Joe, I think!) was incredibly friendly, and we really enjoyed chatting with him on our tour about the sport. It was incredibly clear how much these dogs are cared for and loved, and how much pride the company and people at it take to keep high standards of the living conditions of the animals and the sport of mushing. Overall a 10/10!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. What an amazing day we had. We were a group of six adults, and had the pleasure of participating in handling these wonderful animals. Our guides/mushers were fantastic, and involved us in every aspect of our two hour adventure. The dogs are absolutely fantastic. So full of life and affection. Their desire to pull is palpable, and truly a sight to behold. Thank you again for allowing my family to share this with yours.
