About Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park - Alberta

There are no laws prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the public areas of provincial parks as long as the activity isn’t interfering with the enjoyment of the other park visitors, breaking any of our other regulations, or in any way threatening any of the wildlife in the park.

Metal detectors can be used in the province’s parks, provided that:

  • They are only used on beaches and similar disturbed areas (where digging will not affect the natural ecosystem/habitat). In disturbed areas that are being excavated under a research permit, these areas are closed-off from the public to prevent recreational digging
  • No historic resources are damaged or removed
  • No items are removed from the park
  • All items of value (historical or monetary) are turned over to the local park office
  • They are used for recreation and not for commercial purposes
  • Their use doesn’t violate other laws, such as interfering with a person’s quiet enjoyment in the park. People operating metal detectors are encouraged to use an earpiece/headphones to reduce the likelihood of the noise disturbing others.

As in the case of other park users, a person can expect to encounter officers who will inquire about the activities being conducted and require them to identify themselves and their occupation.

In order to dig for historical resources, a person requires an excavation permit issued by the Parks Division under the Historical Resources Act; this permit is associated with archeological or paleontological research permit. In some locations the excavated items are likely to remain in the park for research and storage; in situations where an excavated item is to be removed from the park, a collection permit is required.

Biggest highlight of the park is the accessibility of the well-marked hiking trails. It’s also convenient that the Townsite of Elkwater is established enough to have its own pub/cafe that serves beer, wine, coffee, tea, sandwiches and ice cream. There are several small sandy beaches on Elkwater Lake, which is picturesque and partially bordered by a brand new boardwalk overlooking the water, as well as picnic tables and playgrounds. Campgrounds on the hill (Ferguson Hill and Lodgepole) lend more toward tent camping as the sites are smaller, and campgrounds down below (such as Beaver Creek) are more open and accessible for trailers.

Multiple campgrounds in this area with varying degrees of comfort, types of privacy, protection from sun, wind etc. We stayed at Firerock campground which has a bunch of first come first serve sites. It has mostly pit toilets with the shower facilities at the bottom. The showers have flush toilets. The water up to Firerock is fine but the pressure in the lines is low so it takes awhile to fill things. Overall the stay was nice and we enjoyed our first time here. The visitor center/camp store restaurant is nice when you need a break. Service is not the quickest when it gets a little busy but the food is decent and you can choose how many sides you want with your dinner and pick which sides you want. Numerous campgrounds in the area have power and some in Firerock do as well. Our area didn't have power sites and because they don't have generator limit times it seems like always in the daytime that you will have at least one going to disturb the otherwise peaceful area. At least one, usually 3-6 running. Hence the 4 star and not 5.

Nice park. Camped here twice in MH, excellent camping, nice sites. Different choices of campsites (full service, water power) fairly private. Nice beach areas, lots of hiking trails in and around campground. Will stay here again if we get the chance.

Had a windy cooler stay in this well managed lovely park only to be very dissappointed on our last morning. While enjoying our last breakfast with vents open from cooking a worker with a tractor and huge rotating road sweeper brush decided it was time to ruin our morning. With the wind blowing right into our site he fired rocks and a huge cloud of dust over our truck and trailer terrorizing our dog tied up outside. Then came back a second time after I tried to wave him off. Complete ineptitude. Lift everything with a layer of dirt all over it.

A must - see provincial park set atop the Alberta / Saskatchewan borders. The best amenities I have experienced in a provincial park. The cleaning team deserves recognition here - thank you! There are about 100kms from the furthest end of the Alberta side to the Saskatchewan border, so it isn’t possible as a day hike. Lots of good easy trails throughout! I managed 8km in a loop without doing a quarter of them.

Oh my gosh! This place is stunning. My second time here. Have to there again. The landscape is brilliant so is the wildlife. It's a shame that this time it was smoky in most parts.
