About Ferguson Hill Campground

There are no laws prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the public areas of provincial parks as long as the activity isn’t interfering with the enjoyment of the other park visitors, breaking any of our other regulations, or in any way threatening any of the wildlife in the park.

Metal detectors can be used in the province’s parks, provided that:

  • They are only used on beaches and similar disturbed areas (where digging will not affect the natural ecosystem/habitat). In disturbed areas that are being excavated under a research permit, these areas are closed-off from the public to prevent recreational digging
  • No historic resources are damaged or removed
  • No items are removed from the park
  • All items of value (historical or monetary) are turned over to the local park office
  • They are used for recreation and not for commercial purposes
  • Their use doesn’t violate other laws, such as interfering with a person’s quiet enjoyment in the park. People operating metal detectors are encouraged to use an earpiece/headphones to reduce the likelihood of the noise disturbing others.

As in the case of other park users, a person can expect to encounter officers who will inquire about the activities being conducted and require them to identify themselves and their occupation.

In order to dig for historical resources, a person requires an excavation permit issued by the Parks Division under the Historical Resources Act; this permit is associated with archeological or paleontological research permit. In some locations the excavated items are likely to remain in the park for research and storage; in situations where an excavated item is to be removed from the park, a collection permit is required.

Out houses need update and water is not drinkable. Sites have mature trees and ample space. Big hill climb to get there so a lower campfire would be better. Noise is not enforced

Varied sizes of camp sites to suit all rv or campers and tents. Remember no power with this campground. Sheltered with enough trees. Great views of sunset even with the smoke.

Cypress hills provincial park is beautiful with a blend of lodgepole pines, various deciduous trees and shrubs plus a reasonably sized lake. It's a forest atmosphere on otherwise rolling prairie plains. Ferguson Hill campsite in Elkwater has no hookups and the sites can be a tight fit. The picture shows a tent quite close to the neighboring trailer. There are much nicer, more private camping areas in Elkwater and that's why Ferguson Hill only gets a three?.

Scenically located within the Cypress forest, this campground has great proximity to many hiking trails. The campsites are well-shaded with picnic tables and fire pits. The sites are small - ideal for tent camping - however we were surrounded by large trailers which barely fit the sites and some drivers experienced trouble maneuvering in and out. Because it’s non-electrical, we had several neighbours running generators early mornings which took away from the peaceful camping experience we were seeking.

Had a wonderful 2 night stay. No services and just outhouse toilets but you know this when booking. Only downfall was no showers but that was a COVID-19 problem not a campground problem. Cant wait to go again!

Great camp ground to visit. The sites are very close together with little privacy but it doesn't feel that way. It is a quiet escape to nature with lots to explore. Beaches, parks and trails offer many ways to enjoy the out doors.

Great campground at the top of the hill with plenty of trees around each site. Quite large sites given how many they have here with decent privacy between each. Watch out for the Easterly sites as they have a significant dropoff (looking at you big trailers) but great for tent campers. There's a small playground for kids at this campground and some swings located at the nearby Lodgepole campground which is a 5 minute bike ride up the road via a trail. Toilets are a little dated but work just fine and are cleaned regularly - would recommend using the toilet/shower block by the check-in kiosk at the bottom of the hill as they are pristine and the showers are free with hot, blasting water! Plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails straight off the campground and close by. Elkwater beach and lake are a 5 minute drive down the hill.

The campsite is set over the valley with a great view. Showers were a short 2km drive down the hill as this campground only has non-potable water. The hiking and bike trails are right off the grounds. The Cypress Hills Park is a pretty gem that I didn't know Alberta had. Will go back again.
