About Elkwater Campground

There are no laws prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the public areas of provincial parks as long as the activity isn’t interfering with the enjoyment of the other park visitors, breaking any of our other regulations, or in any way threatening any of the wildlife in the park.

Metal detectors can be used in the province’s parks, provided that:

  • They are only used on beaches and similar disturbed areas (where digging will not affect the natural ecosystem/habitat). In disturbed areas that are being excavated under a research permit, these areas are closed-off from the public to prevent recreational digging
  • No historic resources are damaged or removed
  • No items are removed from the park
  • All items of value (historical or monetary) are turned over to the local park office
  • They are used for recreation and not for commercial purposes
  • Their use doesn’t violate other laws, such as interfering with a person’s quiet enjoyment in the park. People operating metal detectors are encouraged to use an earpiece/headphones to reduce the likelihood of the noise disturbing others.

As in the case of other park users, a person can expect to encounter officers who will inquire about the activities being conducted and require them to identify themselves and their occupation.

In order to dig for historical resources, a person requires an excavation permit issued by the Parks Division under the Historical Resources Act; this permit is associated with archeological or paleontological research permit. In some locations the excavated items are likely to remain in the park for research and storage; in situations where an excavated item is to be removed from the park, a collection permit is required.

Another great time at Elkwater. This campground is very popular and if you have not made a reservation you are likely out of luck until next year. The lake is great for swimming and kayaking. The beach area is excellent for the kids to play in with a playground right off the beach. You can rent bikes, paddle boards, etc from Alberta Parks. There is an ice-cream truck with treats always open in the summer. There is free mini golf and a disc golf course (again with discs available to rent from Alberta Parks), the community association puts on movie nights most weekends and Alberta Parks has sign up activities for kids daily in the summer. The attached pic is of a full service site at Beaver Creek loop, there are a lot of different site options for camping but plan ahead and bring comfortable shoes.

Wonderful place to camp with our family. lots of things to do - hiking, biking and swimming, all while keeping a safe distance. Not overcrowded and people are so friendly!

0 privacy in each lot, as well as extremely loud children all through the night and day which woke us up at 7 AM every day we camped here. There are large and extremely bright street lights periodically placed throughout the campground, and you can only pray you aren’t unlucky enough to be placed in any of the 10 nearest campsites as it’s bright enough to shine into every trailer or camper you have. Batrooms are unclean, with no soap for 90% of the time we stayed, the toilet seats are stained YELLOW and there is toilet paper all over the ground. the only point I can give this place is the river that runs through a small amount of the campsites is beautiful , but even if you are lucky to have one of these sites there is still zero privacy. When you are not placed beside the river it is even worse- as you and the lot next to eachother are basically sitting side by side in your campsites less than 6 feet away. Not a good experience.

So much to see and do here ! I was out doin some writing and photography on the ability to stay here and just show up and have a blast. We stayed in the rustic Fireside litttle cabins and hen rented bikes, paddle boarded , hiked, canoed, had a blast and even disc golf. Beautiful place to escape the Prairies without having to travel too far

We enjoy coming to this Provincial Park, beautiful lake. Awesome beach for young and old. Numerous hiking and biking trails. There's a small convenience store as well as a restaurant. Laundromat is also located by the store. Plenty of clean washrooms available. The only problem is you really have to watch which sites you pick because some of them having hanging tree branches which can cause damage to the membrane on your trailer.
