About Co-op Sierra Springs

History

Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store

Back in the mid-1950’s, Calgary Co-op was just getting started; the first store opened downtown on November 15, 1956 with a small but enthusiastic grand opening celebration. Founded by farmers, ranchers, and food producers banding together to sell their wares to a dedicated membership of local buyers, Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store.

The idea behind membership in a grocery co-operative like Calgary Co-op was to allow members to own and have an interest in the success of the store—and a say in the products it carries. Members have a financial interest in the success of the cooperative (often through receiving monetary returns based on the frequency of shopping and spending) and in turn they support its success by shopping there.

The grand opening of “store number one,” was held on November 15, 1956, and despite the success and elation at their entrepreneurial venture, it was a small affair. While the local press declined to cover it, Calgary‘s then-mayor Don MacKay was there to cut a ribbon, and the 1000th member joined on that very day in November.

By 1958 membership had climbed to 3,350 and Co-op purchased the land next to the downtown centre for a service station. In 1960 Calgary Co-op had opened its second store, the North Hill Centre on 16th Ave. NE. Membership grew to 5,525, sales reached $2 million, and that time the staff numbered 115. Soon after, more new stores opened including the McLeod Trail Centre (1963), and Brentwood Centre (1965). Membership climbed to 23,038.

Gordon Barker probably says it best: “Calgary co-op was formed by ordinary people who wanted a business they could rely on when others failed to provide them with the services they needed. We must never lose sight of why Calgary Co-op was formed: to serve its members and to be a contributing partner in the community.“

I shop at Co-op because I want to buy local... even if that means dealing with higher prices, bad reward programs, generally grumpy staff, and other issues. Seriously, I worked at Coop so I know it's always been this way, but why is it a universal truth that every co-op is filled with grumpy cashiers... and man... the rewards program is garbage. Takes more effort than most, for less rewards than most... and half the time it doesn't work. The first time it didn't work the staff were great about it, but on a separate occasion they argued with me for some inexplicable reason given the reward clearly messed up. Regardless, I get a headache just thinking about the rewards program. But buy local I keep telling myself.... So I keep shopping here like a crazy person.

This has been the best store I have ever been to for groceries. The staff here are amazing with customer service. I have never been to the till where a cash register staff asks if I found everything I was looking for. Even in the produce, I couldn't find something and a worker came up to me and asked if I needed help finding something. I really like coming here. Excellent customer service, excellent experience and its happened multiple times, so very consistent. The manager should feel proud. It is a clean store and items are in stock as a cherry on top.

I used to shop here, I did for 12 years but not anymore. One day I went to get Bubbly and it was a $1.00 off per box, so I wanted 10 cases. They did not have them in stock so I went to ask for a rain check and a manager named Kari told me (in a rude tone) that she could not give me a rain check for ten, maybe 2. When I asked why she said that she needed to make sure everybody would get the product even though every single time I went there the shelves were empty. I left and I went to Save-On foods and guess what, they had lots of Bubbly, not only $.50 less that Co-op but buy 2 get one free. Ever since I have not returned to Co-op, I save myself having to deal with rude people and empty shelves.

Decent selection of Keto options, thank you! Breads, snacks, sauces, spreads, desserts. A small Co-op but does a good job. Can find some cool things here. Like Space Cacti....
