About Co-op Hamptons

History

Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store

Back in the mid-1950’s, Calgary Co-op was just getting started; the first store opened downtown on November 15, 1956 with a small but enthusiastic grand opening celebration. Founded by farmers, ranchers, and food producers banding together to sell their wares to a dedicated membership of local buyers, Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store.

The idea behind membership in a grocery co-operative like Calgary Co-op was to allow members to own and have an interest in the success of the store—and a say in the products it carries. Members have a financial interest in the success of the cooperative (often through receiving monetary returns based on the frequency of shopping and spending) and in turn they support its success by shopping there.

The grand opening of “store number one,” was held on November 15, 1956, and despite the success and elation at their entrepreneurial venture, it was a small affair. While the local press declined to cover it, Calgary‘s then-mayor Don MacKay was there to cut a ribbon, and the 1000th member joined on that very day in November.

By 1958 membership had climbed to 3,350 and Co-op purchased the land next to the downtown centre for a service station. In 1960 Calgary Co-op had opened its second store, the North Hill Centre on 16th Ave. NE. Membership grew to 5,525, sales reached $2 million, and that time the staff numbered 115. Soon after, more new stores opened including the McLeod Trail Centre (1963), and Brentwood Centre (1965). Membership climbed to 23,038.

Gordon Barker probably says it best: “Calgary co-op was formed by ordinary people who wanted a business they could rely on when others failed to provide them with the services they needed. We must never lose sight of why Calgary Co-op was formed: to serve its members and to be a contributing partner in the community.“

I ordered groceries online for pickup. It was the first time I’ve ever done this and the lady who managed my order was great. She called me to review what was out of stock and what the possible replacements were - she even picked a great avocado to make guacamole with that evening! She was apologetic about what was out of stock and super nice on the phone and when I picked up the groceries. I didn’t have to wait too long for her to come to my car, which was nice. I have heard horror stories from other grocery chains where people have had to wait 30-45 minutes in their car for their groceries! When I got home I found a bag of potato chips I didn’t order, with a note that said thank you for shopping with us and here’s a gift from us! Very thoughtful :)

The staff member stocking produce this morning was not wearing a mask, I saw an elderly woman approach them asking where their mask was. They gave a snarky remark and laughed in her face saying they didn't have to wear one they were the manager. Disgusting is they were actually a manager.

I had a unpleasant experience with one of the gentleman stocking produce. There was a tree of Broccoli on the ground before I even approached greens section, figuring they would throw it out I paid no mind to it, I collected my Broccoli and proceeded to my basket. They man was quickly to literally point fingers and told me to pick it up, when I told him I didn’t drop it, he gave me some attitude and then picked it himself then put it back with the other Broccoli lol. As former employee of the centre I am wildly disappointed; however the till staff are always great!

My family and I really enjoyed shopping at the Calgary Co-op food store. They always treated us like royalty each time we went to the store. I have never experienced a store like this before. Love this place!

My car was stuck by the road about 200m beside this Coop store. Feeling downcast, I came to buy fuel container and fuel. Swaty, I believe the gentleman's I met was super helpful. His warm personality cheered me up. He also taught me how to use the gallon to fuel my car. He made my morning! Thank you for your outstanding service!

Excellent customer service! The man (Didn't get a good look at the name tag, I'm sorry :( ) at the deli counter was so patient with me, and the girl seeing me at checkout (Carleigh? Sorry if I spelled that incorrectly) was so sweet and thoughtful, even pointing out that I had a coupon on file and applying it to my purchase straight away! Would definitely recommend and even go out of my way to shop here again!

I have been to this store many times. Fairly nice store to go to for topping up on specific groceries. The staff are excellent and the selection is usually pretty good. Downsides are that they frequently run out of the products advertised in the weekly flyer which is EXTREMELY annoying (especially the day after the flyer), some of the produce isn't very fresh and their prices can be quite high on some items. There is plenty of room for improvement.
