About Co-op Brentwood

History

Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store

Back in the mid-1950’s, Calgary Co-op was just getting started; the first store opened downtown on November 15, 1956 with a small but enthusiastic grand opening celebration. Founded by farmers, ranchers, and food producers banding together to sell their wares to a dedicated membership of local buyers, Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store.

The idea behind membership in a grocery co-operative like Calgary Co-op was to allow members to own and have an interest in the success of the store—and a say in the products it carries. Members have a financial interest in the success of the cooperative (often through receiving monetary returns based on the frequency of shopping and spending) and in turn they support its success by shopping there.

The grand opening of “store number one,” was held on November 15, 1956, and despite the success and elation at their entrepreneurial venture, it was a small affair. While the local press declined to cover it, Calgary‘s then-mayor Don MacKay was there to cut a ribbon, and the 1000th member joined on that very day in November.

By 1958 membership had climbed to 3,350 and Co-op purchased the land next to the downtown centre for a service station. In 1960 Calgary Co-op had opened its second store, the North Hill Centre on 16th Ave. NE. Membership grew to 5,525, sales reached $2 million, and that time the staff numbered 115. Soon after, more new stores opened including the McLeod Trail Centre (1963), and Brentwood Centre (1965). Membership climbed to 23,038.

Gordon Barker probably says it best: “Calgary co-op was formed by ordinary people who wanted a business they could rely on when others failed to provide them with the services they needed. We must never lose sight of why Calgary Co-op was formed: to serve its members and to be a contributing partner in the community.“

Brentwood Co-op is probably one of the best co-ops in Calgary free parking close to the LRT close to the university. The produce section is excellent the Meat and Deli again excellent carrying Canadian beef which is excellent. The pharmacy and customer service also very very good the staff very helpful very friendly.

This is where we have bought our groceries for the past few years. I really love their focus on having local food options! I also am so glad to find options that are sustainable and more eco-friendly too (like TP made from recycled paper). They have been great throughout COVID and I have always felt comfortable shopping there. It is also nice to see familiar faces at the till, so I think they are able to retain staff.

I really like the prices at Co-op and their customers service is amazing! Deals are always to be found and lately their Co-op Gold D’or brand flavours our perform the known name brand foods. Way to go Co-op!! Their meat selection is plentiful - though sales days are always best to stock up. They are very competitive and now offer biodegradable bags. Personally I find the whole idea of paying for bags obscene as it is already factored into the cost of goods. Lots of parking too. Very pleased with my shopping experiences at Brentwood Co-op.

Always extremely understaffed on tills and their self checkout uses technology from the the cold war era and don’t take cash. People who work here seem like they’re more miserable everyday and I don’t blame them. Just lost a regular shopper.

Pros: Good produce and fresh veggies. Brentwood exclusive sales can be pretty value. Cons: Slightly less selection than other co-op stores. Expensive and you need to tap twice for some reason on all machines.

I asked the butcher to trim the fat and slice a roast for me for beef jerkey. She did it for me immediately and did a great job. It's really nice to see great service. Unfortunately I didn't get her name but it was on the afternoon of Feb 5th if her manager would like to also thank her.

I have never been inside this store but used their delivery service. The first time was good but I only ordered four things. The second time my delivery was slotted for 10-12. I got a text the driver was on his way at 11:25. The delivery happened at 1:24. I was in the middle of a business meeting! When I called to enquire, the lady said they had a lot of orders and sometimes they’re a β€œlittle”!(big emphasis on that word) outside the delivery window. An hour and twenty minutes is a little off? I ordered 16 things. 7 were substituted, 1 was not available. Highly unreliable. Not sure I’ll ever step foot in this store and will use another.

I really like this store. They have a great variety, and carry a lot of local products and products from BC you don't see in other stores. I like that it's a more local chain. Their prepared food is good, even their sushi is decent. Yes it's more expensive than national discount chains, but they have different products and the shopping experience is much more relaxed.
