About Co-op Pharmacy Crowfoot

History

Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store

Back in the mid-1950’s, Calgary Co-op was just getting started; the first store opened downtown on November 15, 1956 with a small but enthusiastic grand opening celebration. Founded by farmers, ranchers, and food producers banding together to sell their wares to a dedicated membership of local buyers, Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store.

The idea behind membership in a grocery co-operative like Calgary Co-op was to allow members to own and have an interest in the success of the store—and a say in the products it carries. Members have a financial interest in the success of the cooperative (often through receiving monetary returns based on the frequency of shopping and spending) and in turn they support its success by shopping there.

The grand opening of “store number one,” was held on November 15, 1956, and despite the success and elation at their entrepreneurial venture, it was a small affair. While the local press declined to cover it, Calgary‘s then-mayor Don MacKay was there to cut a ribbon, and the 1000th member joined on that very day in November.

By 1958 membership had climbed to 3,350 and Co-op purchased the land next to the downtown centre for a service station. In 1960 Calgary Co-op had opened its second store, the North Hill Centre on 16th Ave. NE. Membership grew to 5,525, sales reached $2 million, and that time the staff numbered 115. Soon after, more new stores opened including the McLeod Trail Centre (1963), and Brentwood Centre (1965). Membership climbed to 23,038.

Gordon Barker probably says it best: “Calgary co-op was formed by ordinary people who wanted a business they could rely on when others failed to provide them with the services they needed. We must never lose sight of why Calgary Co-op was formed: to serve its members and to be a contributing partner in the community.“

Some of the staff are knowledgeable & helpful. Many of the staff are quite rude & one guy never marked my file that I had an anaphylactic reaction to a new drug when I asked him to document it. I only found out when I filed a new prescription to replace that drug. The friendly, helpful person asked me why I wasn’t still taking the other one & was shocked he hadn’t documented my file as requested! I find they are slower than other pharmacies I’ve used in the past, including other co-op pharmacies.

Some staff are wonderful, others are rude and abrupt. You can tell they just want to get you off of the phone. Oversights, mistakes and misunderstandings are constant. Generally this pharmacy is a hassle to deal with.

Usually they've been fine, but recently I needed a medication that helps me stay alive. After waiting a week, they told me they hadn't had any in-stock for a month, didn't know/care when they'd get more, and then hung up on me.

This pharmacy is so terrible that I'm leaving my first negative review of anything, ever. I stopped going here about a year ago but this has stuck in my mind ever since. On several occasions, I dropped off or phoned in a prescription, was given a date/time it would be ready, and when I went there to pick it up I was told the medication was out of stock and I'd have to wait a week. After this happened about 3 times in a row, I finally said, "Can you please call me to let me know if the medication is out of stock so I can make other arrangements?" And I was told, "no, we're not able to do that." Excuse me, what??? Not only is that a total lack of common courtesy that they can't be bothered to make a simple phone call, but it's potentially dangerous if one is expecting their medication to be ready and it's going to be delayed a week, with no warning. I stopped coming here after that. I hope they've got their act together since then, but based on recent reviews it doesn't seem like it. Unbelievably bad service!

Rating would be much lower if I had an option. Staff are very abrupt, rude and lack care for the needs of customers. Customer service is not a priority. I never felt heard when concerns were expressed, manager, Rebecca, is more concerned about justifying things rather than understanding customer concerns, this filtered all the way down to staff. On several occasions there was a lack of regard and understanding whether prescription was filled on time, very quick to blame and point figners that it was doctor's office fault for not filling prescription in a timely manner. Will never go back, transfered presecription to a different pharmacy. Much happier now!

I’ve finally gotten so fed up with this pharmacy that I’ve switched to London Drugs who have always been on the ball with every prescription. This pharmacy has always made errors with my prescriptions like inputting the incorrect amount of refills in their system, so I don’t get the amount prescribed by my doctor. Additionally, when they have to order medications they don’t have in stock, they would not inform me of when they were ready for pickup. Not even when I’d phoned them. It was always a guessing game of driving back and fourth to see if my medications were ready. I’ve even spoke to employees in person and over the phone asking if they could give me a call when they were ready. The answer was always β€œno, we cannot do that”. Is it really that much of an inconvenience to give your customer a quick 30 second call to let them know their medications are ready for pickup??? Every time I spoke to any of the employees, it seemed like I was a huge inconvenience and getting in their way of working. If a one minute conversation about medication interactions is too much of a hassle for these employees, they are in the wrong industry. Needless to say, I will not be returning.

The customer service here is extremely rude. I have had multiple experiences like this over the past year, I am not basing this off of a single isolated incident. If i could put less then 1 start I would, and I will definitely be finding a new pharmacy. I do not recommend.

This pharmacy used to be fantastic and always super helpful but things have really gone downhill. We gave them the benefit of the doubt (due to covid) but today was just horrible. The Crowfoot pharmacy had reached out a number of months ago to make sure my file was up to date and heard I was thinking of quitting smoking. They suggested a program that covered nicotine replacement products so I happily decided to quit smoking. Unfortunately, halfway through the program, the service at this location got so atrocious that I gave up and decided to pay out of pocket most of the time to buy it elsewhere and save the hassle. One staff member (who I know the name of, but don't want to publicly shame) has consistently been rude to both me and my husband; shouting at us we were at the wrong line, so we would go where she instructed and she would tell at us that that wasn't correct either. We also had issues with our files being changed for no reason so insurance benefits that were used fine for months were suddenly not listed on my file and had to be re-added. That I can look beyond because people are human and mistakes happen. However I can't tolerate disrespectful, condescending people and that seems to be all (or at least most of) the staff at this location these days. Today was the final straw for us when they were dismissive and told us "we don't do that program anymore" about the smoking cessation program (that they literally sales pitched to me) and yelled at us to stop wasting their time. I love co-op, but we're moving our prescriptions elsewhere.
