★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I've been going there for a while. The staff is normally always friendly and helpful. I often have my son with me. Some of the staff are aware he is autistic, and do what they can to keep him engaged while I'm paying or signing papers. This past Friday was a whole different story. Out of boredom, he entered a blocked off area. There is absolutely nothing in that area he can get into, but I'm sure it's blocked for a reason.
Anyway, the woman who was doing my transaction immediately snapped at him to get out of the area. My son is still learning to put his feelings into words, however, at that moment he was unable to express himself verbally, therefore, giving the woman a dirty look. She responded by reprimanding him. The tone she used with him really struck a nerve with me. However, what really got me was the fact that she felt the need to interupt her co-worker and his customer and point out his behaviour. Meanwhile, my anxiety is through the roof, because normally incidents like this usually escalate into my child having a full on meltdown. I wanted to tell this woman of my son's struggle, and while she feels that he should mind his manners, she needs to mind her tone of voice, but at that moment I was too busy diffusing a situation that could have possibly led to chairs being toppled over. Luckily, he was able to use the tools that were taught to him to calm himself down and not let himself get into the "red zone". Bottom line, if a child is doing something they shouldn't be, don't adress the child. Bring it to the parents attention and let them deal with it the way they feel is best.
