About Broxburn Vegetables & Cafe

Broxburn Farm
IMG-20200602-WA0002.jpg

In 1994 Paul de Jonge purchased 80 acres of land five kilometres east of Lethbridge on highway 3, 1 km south on Broxburn road. The farm provided a home but was intended for a U-pick strawberry operation. In 1996 a small greenhouse was built to grow peppers. In 2001 a larger greenhouse went into operation and tomatoes and cucumbers were added to the mix. In 2002 a barn was remodelled for the purpose of a storefront and cafΓ©. In June of 2004, the cafΓ© was officially opened. Today land at Broxburn Vegetables is farmed for the production of various fruits and vegetable, including one of the largest commercial broccoli crops in Alberta.

Farm Fresh Produce

At Broxburn Vegetables we pride ourselves in growing superior quality field and greenhouse fruits and vegetables. We presently operate a 3-acre greenhouse that is heated by two natural gas boilers. In the greenhouse, crops are grown biologically; meaning that we introduce natural predators instead of spraying chemical pesticides to kill the pests. The most common pests found on peppers are aphids. The predators used to target these pests are purchased from around the world and are introduced into the greenhouse on a weekly basis. We choose our variety of tomatoes carefully so that our customers receive the maximum flavor. Harvesting vine ripened tomatoes daily ensures the plant benefits to their maximum potential. Long English cucumbers, mini cucumbers, eggplant, beans, and butterleaf lettuce are also grown in the greenhouse. Greenhouse harvest begins in February with mini cucumbers and continues until December when we clean out the greenhouses to replant.

U-Pick Operation

Strawberry u-pick open Monday - Saturday from 8 AM till 5 PM!

Our primary U-pick crops are strawberries and raspberries. The raspberries and ever-bearing strawberries produce berries from July right up until the first frost. This often is later in September or sometimes in October. The cool prairie nights contribute to the sweetness of the berries.

  • U-pick strawberries and raspberries are $3.50/lb.
  • U-pick baskets (4 litres) are available in our produce store for $1.
  • If you are bringing your own container, please have it weighed in the store before picking.
  • U-pick strawberries are available for picking. U-pick raspberries will be ready in mid-August. Please call the Broxburn store for any questions regarding the u-pick operation.

Cafe was tasty with great service. Really interesting to know everything we ate came straight from them. Shop had great selection of veggies but I was taken by the cheese and bread. Will definitely be returning to both very soon.

THE BEST vegetables!! We also get all out strawberries from here for eating and for jams. Everything tastes so much better from Boxburn then it does from a grocery store! Glad we can get things so early and so late in the year.

The food was fantastic in the Cafe as was the service. The produce in the market was absolutely top notch. The red pepper soup and chicken and sundried tomato sausages that I got for later were both delicious! Absolutely recommend making the trip out there!

It's a beautiful place. Staff are nice. Produce is great. Happened to arrive when there was a power outage around 1pm on July 27. Cafe had to close so no lunch for us. Produce side was accepting cash only. We hung around but eventually left as we weren't carrying cash and the outage could go on for a while. Still really wanted to go so did some other errands and planned to come back. Called ahead to see if all was resolved. Got a voice message from March. Twice in the span of 10 mins. Apparently no one can be bothered to update the message or pick up the phone when it rings... We decided to go back and arrived around 325pm to find electricity on. To our surprise the sign in the Cafe window was displaying the time: open until 4pm. We finally made it. Both doors locked. Shop was open, but by then we were too annoyed to go in. We could have saved ourselves a trip if someone had answered the phone when we called. I'm sure there's some hunger-grumpiness involved here, as I write this reviee, but this was a disappointing exprience for the two of us who came all the way down from Banff-Canmore for a visit today. Too bad.

Came here for lunch with my parents and we were pretty disappointed. I had tomato soup which had no herbs, no cream, nothing to try and cut down the acidity, just a bowl of pureed tomatoes with a couple croutons and a spoonful of cheese which did nothing to improve the taste. Dad had the red pepper soup which tasted like water with a hint of red pepper. Mom had the mushroom soup which may as well have been a bowl of thick milk. I also got the BLT which tasted fine but it was so soggy. I kept having to dump out juices and the tortilla was turning to mush as I ate. It was also pretty small for being $14. The only good things were Dad's salad and Mom's bread. We decided to skip dessert since our meals were so lacking. All in all, I don't think we'll be back any time soon, which is too bad because the food used to be amazing. 2 stars because the coffee was pretty good.

Took my spouse berry picking at the end of the season. Their u-pick strawberries and raspberries were amazing. We also enjoyed their market store and cafe. The food was so fresh and delicious. Great spot to spend the afternoon.
