About AQ Outdoors - Aquabatics Calgary

NEW for 2021, Splitboard HQ introduces a restructured AST 1 with TWO field days. Students will be required to complete some pre-course reading, which will be expanded on during two field days with an ACMG guide. This course provides an introduction to being in the backcountry within the scope of the Avalanche Canada AST 1 program. We'll cover concepts of using terrain to minimize hazard, basic snow stability tests, travel tips and more.

Given that many of our students are on splitboards for the first time (we welcome ski tourers), we do tie in a syllabus around using splitboards effectively. We do this in a way that compliments the avalanche safety content. We feel this provides a well-rounded syllabus, with a good number of tangible takeaways in both safety and technique.

Our AST 1 programs are suitable for snowboarders on splitboards (discount rentals available LIMITED QUANTITY) and skiers on touring setups.

At the end of the course you will be awarded an Avalanche Canada AST 1 certification.

R	Rod Bauer on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The products are great but customer service is questionable. Three employees stand at the front desk and don’t ask you if we needed help. My wife and I went buy kayak accessories, we had to ask them to help us. Then we buy a dog life jacket which ends up being too big. They refuse to put another size aside for me. I had to argue with the employee on the phone. Her comment was someone else may want to buy it. Ok so I bought one now I want a different size, which is a guaranteed sale and they say they won’t put it aside. Unbelievable. Reluctantly she agrees to put it aside. I said I’d be at the store right when it opens to pick it up, which I was. I walk into the store, I see a note on the counter with my name on it but no doggie life jacket put aside. The employee is gone looking for it and can’t find it. It’s the only one large they have, which is why I wanted it put aside. I end up finding it on the sales floor. They never did put it aside. Update: I did get a phone call and a response to this post which I appreciate.

I went on a split boarding trip and my guide said my skins were “shit” and that I had to turn around and go back which I believe the skins were fine, anyway. I took all my rental gear back and instead of telling me it’s my problem they offered me a free rental and were really understanding. I’d highly recommend using this shop!

Our instructor's teaching style was approachable, encouraging and thorough. Thomas clearly explained each skill, in addition to all-important safety factors and allowed plenty of opportunity to practice and seek any support needed. We all feel well-equipped now to head out on either lake or river to further develop our kayaking skills!

I was concerned about having a Kayak that would fit as I am a bigger guy and there were a couple of choices for stable comfortable boats that fit me nicely. Robin and her partner were great as they reviewed kayak equipment, safety and skills. Lots of time on the water to practice paddling skills and enjoy the experience.

I have been kayaking for one full season and I learned lots to help my skills along. Highly recommend this course for any newcomers to the sport as well as anyone that has not taken any formal training. I will definitely be back for more courses along with plenty of trips to their store which is well worth the venture if you have not yet been.
