About Amaranth Foods - 4th St. Market

A Short History

In the early 90’s, our fearless founder, Ken Klatt, saw the need for a new kind of health food store- one that welcomed everyone. After an awkward experience shopping at the local organic food store while wearing a suit, Ken got to work creating this space.

Let’s let him tell the story.

Two events in my life led me down this path. The first was environment-related. I was one of a small group of Calgarians who valued the benefits of recycling paper and glass. We worked individually in our own communities to host monthly recycling drives at our community centres. As our success grew, we joined forces and reached out to business partners – a local mall, the city of Calgary, Nova Corporation – and initiated recycling drives at a shopping centre in northwest Calgary.

The second was my getting involved with a local health food co-op. I began shopping at the Earth Harvest Co-op after tasting some organic apples.  Befriending staff on my weekly shopping trips led to several terms as a director for the co-op. At that time, it seemed like the industry was living in the past and that by presenting a more inviting shopping experience, we would encourage more people to buy these healthy products. I had the concept of increasing this market by creating a demand for organics rather than marching in the street and telling farmers what to grow.

I can handle that everything in this store is overpriced and understand it’s due to the convenience of specialty items. I have always happily shopped here. However today I decided I will gladly drive 10 min to the light cellar where not only do they have all the items you can dream of but their staff are actually friendly and understand what customer service is. I tried to order a coffee. Lender with superfoods which are all available on the menu but this lady refused to add the items into a blender and turn it on for 10 seconds due to β€œlabour costs”. She told me it is just not worth it to rinse out the blender and β€œall that”. Wow. Life must be a struggle. I believe in spreading positive energy so perhaps Amaranth should add elixirs to their menu for the winter. Not too sure how many smoothies you will sell and perhaps do some rehiring or understand why you work in a health food store that deals with people looking for the type of beverage I tried to order.

Great place to shop, very convenient location with lots of parking. Great selection of products and always willing to special order a product in, if they have access to it. Store is laid out very well and products are easy to find. I love the fact they support and carry a lot of local vendors products from surrounding areas. Great to see local helping local. Pricing on some things may be a little higher but based on quality of product and the fact it is a smaller local operation but this is a minor concern to me. I would rather support local. Staff is super friendly and always smiling. The staff is one of the best reasons to shop here. Always great for a laugh or two. Well done! my go to grocery store.

Extremely judgmental and racist place.. I went up to the till and was treated like I was the devil. I said hi and no reply. Instead I got dagger eyes. She asked me if I was in there system I said no. She didn't even ask me if I could sign up. The racist part I don't even want to discuss on here. I ended up getting my receipt in a aggressive manner. What a miserable place. The receipt luckily has all the info. Till number and clerk number. I don't recommend this place.

I highly don’t recommend going grocery shopping there, as they did not ask me if I found anything and didn’t bother to help me neither ask me if everything was going ok. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE ! As well RACIST.

Headline: Customer profiling, unfounded accusations of theft, highly incompetent staff; these, I assume, are the cornerstones of the Amaranth customer service policy. After many years of being a loyal customer, this place accused me of stealing as I was checking out (ie: PAYING for my items) and asked me to empty my pockets. When I reported this malfeasance the OWNER called to tell me to never shop there again. All in all, don’t waste your money here. There are far better choices in the Calgary health food market. I’ve gotten SOOO many friends, family, coworkers etc to swear off shopping here. Join us in boycotting a poorly managed, over priced hole of a store.

Anything that you're looking for in terms of organic, local, clean eating and/or health conscious-wise...this store has it. It is very well organized, well stocked and contains a large variety of products from vitamins to snacks. Staff here is friendly and welcoming. Pricing is a little higher than a reg grocery store at times but for what the store stands for, location and their curated selected goods...it is well reflected and reasonable.

Always a happy lady after visiting this store. Faves: truffle pigs chocolate and love potion kombucha. Best quick healthy snacks in the hood ? ?
