Winter Tires’ Special Rubber Compound & Flexible Tread
The biggest difference between all season tires and winter tires, is that winter tires are created with a special rubber compound that is designed to stay flexible in cold temperatures, which keeps the tire in contact with the road giving you better traction in wintery conditions. All season tires don’t have this compound, so when temperatures go below 7°C all season tires become hard and rigid and can lose traction with the road. Winter tires are highly recommended for anyone driving in cold weather conditions.
Designed with Sipes
Another difference between winter and all season tires is the sipes. Sipes are small slits in tires that push snow and water away from the tire. Winter tires have larger and deeper sipes to move water and snow faster, helping with acceleration as well as reduce braking distances on wet, snow covered and slippery roads.
Look for the Snowflake Symbol
In order to know if your tires are winter certified, look for the snowflake emblem on the side of your tire. Created by the Rubber Association of Canada and the Rubber Manufacturers’ Association, this stamp validates that the tire meets the specific snow traction requirements and is approved to drive in snow and icy conditions.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I ordered two tires at Tire Warehouse Online Ltd. and chose Trail Tire on the west end as my installer (17108-107 Ave). I was warmly greeted and directed to a comfy and super clean waiting room. There was complimentary water, coffee and tea as well as a TV to watch. There was a feature window that allowed you to see your vehicle if you wished to do so. The bathroom was shockingly clean. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the whole place. They did the two tires within 40 minutes and also offered me a complimentary mechanical inspection to see if there were any other issues. I talked with 3 employees there and all very friendly and helpful. I will take my vehicle back to this location for sure.

The quote was better than the others with additional perks (warranties, assistance, etc) and they accommodated my extra tire issues without hesitation. I'm grateful. I will use them in the future for wheel alignments and anything else that can be done outside the dealership and I highly recommend Trail Tire. Everyone was professional and kind. What a treat! The guys are no nonsense and Real about repairs needed, fair rates, price matching on most tires/rims, and a huge selection on tires, rims, and accessories for almost every make and model (now they are American owned so selection has gone way up). I go here for all my mechanical issues, as well as my new LED headlights and mounts, plus install on my Subaru. I highly recommend Habs their in-house mechanic. If you haven't checked these guys out, it's definitely worth giving them a call to see if they can help hook you up!
