Everyone looks forward to the day their braces come off and no matter how long you have had braces on, the day you get your braces off is a day to celebrate! If your final braces appointment is coming soon, you are probably wondering what to do to prepare for your appointment and what to expect afterwards.  

Here are some important things you need to do before and after you get your braces off.

What do to prepare for your appointment

• Set your appointment: Now this may sound redundant however, it is advisable to set your appointment for a day where you have the remainder of the day to rest. This is to give you a break to get used to the different feel of your new smile.
• Don’t get too excited: Life can be unpredictable, so can your “debond day”. Sometimes your teeth may need a little longer in braces, in which case, your appointment could be changed. If your appointment gets delayed, do not be dismayed, your new smile is worth the wait.
• Clean your teeth: Even if you are transitioning from braces to not wearing braces, the maintenance of proper hygiene is key. Come to your big day with clean teeth.
• Understand that your appointment might take a little time: Getting your braces off may take longer than you expect. While removing your braces themselves should not take long, your orthodontist may have additional tasks to complete such as cleaning etc.
• Finally, come with a cameraor phone: Take a selfie of you with your braces for a “before” picture so you can compare and post your #selfiesmile photo after your braces come off!

What to do after taking your braces off

In general, you will need to follow your orthodontist’s advice when it comes to after- care of your new smile.

Once your braces come off, it’s time to enjoy that new smile. However, it is important to remember that just because the braces are gone, doesn’t mean that your orthodontic treatment is over. You still have to wear your retainer and take care of your teeth as your orthodontist has instructed.

In some rare case, odd bits of cement can be stuck to your teeth after your braces have been taken out. While this is not dangerous, be sure to tell your orthodontist immediately so that they can be removed.

Make sure to keep your regular check ups with your dentist and your orthodontist as recommended so as to protect your new smile.
