Taking a look at the art class was a great experience to see all this creativity finding expression in the various projects. 89th] in the art gallery a lady was finishing painting a decorative banner for the town of Summerland, lovely work in warm, bright colours. I enjoy the exhibits very much and the gallery shop offers attractive artifacts for sale.

I visit Summerland each year and wonder how I never discovered this beautiful stone bear sitting in a little grassy area in front of the Museum and Community Arts Center. Stewart Steinhauer, a Cree Stone carver from the Saddle Lake First Nation found his inspiration in indigenous spiritual ceremonies. It was the Bear spirit that approached Stewart during a spiritual fast and propelled his talent to create numerous Bears in various forms and stages of life. Stewart a self taught carver, created Voice of Mother Earth on site using the "direct carving" method for the Okanogan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium in 2002. The granite boulders were sourced from the Penticton Indian Band and are placed to represent a medicine wheel with four stones facing the cardinal directions. The teddy bears at the the base represent the stolen children taken from their reserves and placed in residential schools for colonial reprogramming. The museum is quaint and offers some interesting history. The Arts center currently has some great art installations on the exterior walls. On my walk I was visited by a Hoary Marmot.
