About Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada

More than just a gift shop, the Landing Zone Boutique is a shopping experience.

Building on the customer insights research completed by Probe Research and our updated brand identity, extensive research and planning went into the development of the museum’s gift shop, the Landing Zone Boutique.

Staff and volunteers met with the Museum Store Association to develop an understanding of the global retail and gift shop marketplace, the museum’s revenue projections, and a design for the gift shop.

The store is stocked with items for aviation enthusiasts, lovers of local goods, educational toys, branded merchandise, and more. Keeping in mind the museum’s commitment to truth and reconciliation, the Landing Zone Boutique also features products by Indigenous artists.

Went to the grand reopening Saturday morning, but it really didn't feel grand at all. The front staff weren't very enthusiastic, but we did appreciate the people wondering about ready to teach you about the planes, or offer to take photos for you. I hate to say it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. When you hear the name Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, I'd expect something big, but the museum is rather small, and the planes available, except for maybe one or two, aren't that exciting. I know there is history, but there wasn't anything that makes me want to go WOW, I want to come back again! The observation deck to see outside was sad, and I feel you're supposed to look at the cargo or the parking lot, as the planes were taking off on the other side. Sigh, gone are the days of the great observation deck in the old airport. Another issue we noticed was the short barricades surrounding everything. We saw some people nearly fall over them, especially when having to look at the planes above them. May have safety issues in the future. The gift shop was small with not much that didn't have a Jets hockey logo on it. Loving planes and aviation doesn't equal loving a hockey team. All in all, the museum was okay, nothing spectacular and definitely not worth an annual pass. You can pretty much cover everything and still make it in time for your flight.

And finally this museum re opened! :) We missed it! Been coming here with my son for years, he loves everything that flies and especially for winter months it's a great place to entertain child for at least a couple of hours (highly recommend purchasing membership to save on visits). As the old museum of aviation this one has lots of items to showcase, a short movie about a crash plane with leftovers displayed, playground for children, snack bar and giftshop. Lots of washroom, motorized scooters, coat rack and view lounge. I heard there might be even classes for children (unfortunately employee couldn't give me any detailed information). Otherwise a really enjoyed coming back for reopening staff is extremely friendly, helpful and passionate about aviation and they are happy to share their knowledge with visitors.

*Update* I went to see the new building, very nice layout. The only complaint I have, and I hope they bring it up with Transit, is no bus stop close to it. Pretty long walk for people with mobility issues.** Very interesting! Lots of airplanes and history packed into the hangers. It should be even better when they get the new location up and running. Love it when they bring in the old but still flyable planes for special events. They do need to advertise those better. Too often you hear about it after the fact.

The new museum is outstanding! The building is very modern, bright and welcoming. The planes are displayed very nicely and there is lots of room to walk around and check everything out. The observation deck has the best view of the airport. Overall we were very impressed with the new museum and have already been twice since they opened a week ago!

Amazing nes building, way easier to see the displays. Especially with the second floor balcony. Only complaint is the food prices. $8 for a small sandwich. No thanks.

Went to the member preview the day before it opened to the public and was really impressed. Vast improvement over their previous location with a viewing area to watch planes takeoff and land, interactive displays, planes you can walk through, play areas for children of all ages, food and drinks, classrooms and meeting rooms available to rent, and a wonderful gift shop with some really nice stuff! Took my 19 month old son who is obsessed with planes and he loved it!

Our first visit to the renovated Aviation Museum. We were impressed with the display and notes by the displays. Easy to have a great look at the planned from all sides. The observation area was well spaced. We were very impressed by the loan of a motorized wheelchair. This gave one of our party a great opportunity to see all of the museum.
