★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We’re almost done with our basement reno and although
there were a few instances when the project had to be delayed,
by a week in total by the end of it, it was totally worth it. The
design team was great in showing off the kitchen, living room,
bathroom, bedroom and dry sauna with the 3D virtual layout tour.
The installation team also came on time every day and worked
non-stop until they went home and the end result looks amazing!
Big thanks to Marlon for getting us over the humps.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Huge thanks to Matt for taking us in after a horror story basement renovation we had with another basement reno company. He reassured us that our basement can be made new and beautiful again and got to work. Very smooth communication, any questions answered within 2 hours over email outside of business hours and during them, I’d receive a reply almost immediately from him. They came in and helped us through the design process to find the best flooring, walls and lighting for us and stopped every time there was a modification to the original plan to give us a consultation to ensure we weren’t left in the dark. Installation took 4 weeks and now it looks brand new, love it!

making it as spacious and comfortable as possible for our family.
Big, expansive rooms, soft and smooth flooring and a wonderful
closed off movie room with sound-proof walls to have Friday
movie nights together! Also great aesthetic and design for resale
and/or renting it out in the future. Loving it!

We installed a living room, bedroom and bar for stone-tiled walls as well as marble flooring in the bar and hardwood flooring for the rest of the basement. They put a lot of work into making it a reality, and I’m glad they did. Super meticulous work and a great end result! Great company and good pricing!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My wife had just given birth so we needed the installers to be flexible with their schedule, thankfully the Penguin Basements team was able to make it work. Also love professionalism. With all of the home improvement companies, all of the things are done under the table but not here. Every time a decision was made, a design consultation was scheduled and we were informed exactly what was going to happen, how it would happen and if we wanted it to have a different look. At the end of the day, we now have a beautiful basement, finished on time and on budget.

projects. Seeing the floor plan, choosing out your favourite design
and colour, and examining the 3D virtual layout tour is perfect for
picking your ideal design and knowing what you’ll get in advance
before paying. The staff always made sure to keep me as
informed as possible during the project and the install team
worked day and night to finish the whole thing in a month.

We were even able to save by choosing to do the painting ourselves! Thanks to Penguin Basements for making it happen. We used to just throw things into the basement as storage, now we have late night parties and movie nights down here!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This company has very talented sales people who know how to make a pitch, I will give them that. After that is where things started going downhill. The basement we were left with is an embarrassment (please see the attached photo for proof - yes, that wall is curved). No signoffs at critical junctures, I was just presented with this mistake at the end. You would think a company that has expertise in basements could do better than this. Even during the design process, mistakes were made and you would be forgiven for thinking this was the first basement this company had done. Vanities that were too wide, and then ultimately the one that was installed was too deep (and looks out of place). Substandard paint job, cracks in drywall, water leak, and the list goes on. The worst is that they are not responsive at all, and this behaviour goes all the way to the top with the president. We now have an open permit with the city that is dragging on and on with no resolution in sight, and remedial work that needs to be done. If we get a response at all, it is "we will try to book time at this time" and there is no follow up / no one shows up when they are supposed to. It honestly could be a coin toss between some Kijiji contractors and this outfit - take your hard earned money elsewhere.
Edit (Spring 2022): I am now updating this review to state that Penguin did come back to fix the main issues we identified (in particular, the wall as noted in the photos) and are continuing to work with us to resolve any other more minor items. They have also closed the open permit that we had with the city and we have passed inspection. This is progress, but is still much longer than it should have taken, considering this project started in summer 2021.
