About Norseman Outdoor Specialist

The Norseman has been a staple in the Calgary outdoor community for over 40 years. It was opened by Norwegian immigrants, and has been providing the best knowledge, equipment and staff over the decades. Since then, our passion for the community and outdoors has helped us transform and grow, and we now specialize in cross country skiing, hiking and climbing.

Our cross country ski roots are important to us, and we do our best to honour them by offering personalized service, and education. Whether you are a beginner or an expert skier, an ice climber or an ultralight backpacker, or you are interested in Nordic skiing or light touring, we would be happy to help you find the perfect skiing gear or equipment for your next adventure.

From the beginning our focus has been to provide the best knowledge, equipment, staff and customer service. Our passion for the community and the outdoors has transformed us into a store that emphasizes education as much as outdoor equipment. Through our experienced staff and community commitment, we continue to serve the highest quality gear, XC ski lessons, waxing clinics, workshops, info sessions, equipment and ski rentals.

Come on by to check out our products, rent some equipment to give it a try, or just to talk about your next outdoor adventure.

Spent a great deal of time helping me pick out boots. First they measured me, then they pulled out at least four brands in my size. I went in wanting a certain type of boot but soon realized other boots fit much better, were more comfortable and suited my activities better. They educated me on proper lacing techniques and what to look for when trying on the different boots. I learnt a lot in my time at the store and appreciate how passionate and knowledgeable the staff are! I was very happy with my purchase and have had happy trails ever since. You gotta go here!

Very much a fan of this store. I placed a complicated order over the phone and it arrived with no hassle. The sales people I spoke to immediately sounded trustworthy and talked me though alternative gear choices. It's nice to know that places still exist where high end gear / specialty items can be purchased, ordered from the US and made available to Canadian consumers. The folks who purchase for this store clearly love the outdoors and are aware of modern trends in outdoor activities. There should be more places like Norseman.

I went there twice for items and both times was greeted with indifference. The second time I took a chance but arrived near closing time ( didn’t know the hours but arrived prior to closing and the door was unlocked). The man asked me how he could help and immediately took an obvious look at his watch. I asked for the item I wanted (I was directly wanting something and didn’t need help) and was told they were closing soon. This made me feel unwelcome and an inconvenience. I went for the same thing at MEC and was helped ++. I won’t shop somewhere that has rude staff even though it is close to home. Bye bye

Another poor experience here. I wanted to buy new xc skis and boots. The man in the grey Fischer shirt grabbed two pairs of entry level boots and just left. I was looking for something a little higher end. . I waited and waited for him to come back so I left. The lady with the accent on the phone seemed very helpful. Too bad.

Had a terrible experience. I was sold a pair of cross country skis (with scales) that are so long and stiff the scales don't touch the snow... So basically I was sold skis that I am too light for.... I was clearly sold what was in stock regardless of whether or not the ski would work for me. Had a way better experience at Sports Experts and Strides in Canmore where they were moreMORE knowledgable AND HONEST about what they had in inventory and what would and wouldn't work for me.... When I told Norseman's about being sold skis too big for me, they suggested I wear a heavy pack when skiing to make myself weigh more. Ouuchh.... This place is so overrated.

Norseman is currently taking bookings by appointment only. I went in looking for a new pair of hiking/backpacking boots. Pete was really knowledgeable and helped me find the best boots for my narrow heels. This was my first visit to the store and I will definitely be back! The service is great.

The norseman is my go to store for all my hiking and skiing needs, so naturally when I planned my first backpacking/camping trip to Assiniboine I stopped by the norseman to get some new gear. Luckily for me, Anthony was there to help!!! He provided me with priceless tips/knowledge and got me set up with a wonderful montane backpack. I had the most fabulous first experience backpacking and I have Anthony and the gear I purchased from the norseman to thank! The items this store carries are top quality and so are the staff!! I can barely wait for my next backing trip and my next stop at the norseman! My most sincere thanks!!

Very pleased with a binding repair on my favorite classic skis. Not only did they fix the one that was broken but reinforced my other ski as well. Very happy.
