About Knifewear Calgary

Knifewear owner and president Kevin Kent’s fascination with handcrafted Japanese knives began while he was working as sous-chef for the legendary chef Fergus Henderson at St. John restaurant in London, England. Back in Canada in 2007 he began selling them out of a backpack from the back of his bicycle, while working as a chef in Calgary. He considers his chef years as the best education for being an entrepreneur. Being a chef takes long hours, involves hard work, both mentally and physically, and chefs must be able to put out fires, both literal and figurative, with extreme competence. Today, Kent is still just as obsessed with Japanese knives as the day he first held one. A couple times a year, he travels to Japan to meet with his blacksmith friends and drinks far too much sake. Each visit he learns more about the ancient art of knife-making. Through this obsession Knifewear has expanded to include five Knifewear stores in Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Edmonton. Plans are also underway to open a store in Kyoto, Japan. He refuses to confess how many Japanese knives he owns … but he admits the number is rather high. Follow Kevin on Twitter at @knifenerd and find out more about the stores at knifewear.com, and if you meet him in person, ask him to tell you his Lou Reed story.

Friendly and prompt customer service on my first visit. Various unique types of knifes in addition to the common ones. They've got a small section with miscellaneous kitchenware, tools and even cookbooks. I will definitely come back if I require some knife sharpening or to consult the staff on their expertise.

Ya really nice guy working at the farmers market I gotta go to their full store but I was still impressed with what they had at the market. He sharpened my knife super good I cut my finger within 10 mins of using so maybe my knife was too full for too long I’m not sure but they have a lot of good knives and kitchen equipment for industrial chefs. Nice

My favorite Mcusta EDC suffered a broken pocket clip. Repair required new frame parts from Mcusta in Japan. Thanks to new regulations brought forth by "the hair", importing something simple like a frame and wood scale replacement part have become almost unattainable. Over and above doesnt start to tell how far the staff at Knifewear went to help me out. To simplify, for several reasons, the new OEM replacement parts were picked up and brought back from Japan in person. In PERSON! And... no charge! In a day and age where kindness and generosity have taken the back seat, its experiences like this that rekindle my faith in humanity. Thank you for all the extra miles traveled. Knifewear and staff have built another lifetime customer and friend. Thank you

I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of Knifewear's customer service and products. Ellie was such a pleasure to speak and deal with - She is the definition of quality customer service. I had an issue with one of the knives I purchased, as it was not what i wanted and she took the time and care to ensure that in the end I would walk away happy. I ended up exchanging the knife for another knife another knife. I will forever be a return customer. Thank you Ellie and your team for all that you do. Canada is lucky to have a company like yours.

I took their intro to knife sharpening course and had an awesome experience! Colin was an excellent instructor and made the course super engaging. Kalen was present in the room which meant there was always somebody to give you feedback on your progress or give tips on technique. On my way home from the course I bought a few tomatoes and spent the rest of the afternoon seeing how thinly I could slice them. I am excited to further hone my skills at sharpening and one day purchase a knife from them as well!

Amazing store! I have bought several knives here and the staff are always beyond helpful and knowledgeable. When you walk in you feel like you are walking into a friends house…a friend with a phenomenal Japanese knife collection. Highly recommend, I’d give it 10 stars if I could.

EDIT: I chatted with a few different folks from Knifewear after the review. In short I ended up driving back down and they took the knife and brought it back to life - It looks phenomenal, and sharp! They were kind enough to clean up the others I had at the same time. Confidence restored - thanks Knifewear. TLDR: 5 stars if I had of dealt with the right people the first time around, I'm sure I would've had no issues. Highly recommend. Lots of knowledge here and a great selection of knives. However, Do NOT recommend for sharpening. Brought our Miyabi set in (including a single edge) as we had called ahead and been told they had the experience. Upon pick up the knife appeared to have been sharpened with a grinder. No joke. First time I had gotten them sharpened - pictures below are after 'fixing them'. I was offered a quick tour and a discount if I wanted to upgrade as a formality. I understand these are maybe not the caliber knives they deal with - but I paid the full price for the service and received much less knife back then I brought in. Not worth the drive, not worth the money.

I was a chef for many years and have worked with many knifes, my favorite ever came from the garage sale knifewear has. That alone would not merit 5 stars though. The staff are awesome and super helpful, they'll help you get into easy to care for japanese knives or if you're like myself a carbon steel and they are just passionate about knives. Best knife store for sure
