About James Ave Pumphouse Food & Drink

James Avenue Pumphouse Food & Drink, is built in a historical building which was Winnipeg's first high-pressure water system.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offer front row seats to this engineering feat, with century-old pumps and gears preserved for posterity. Built in 1906 to help fight the frequent fires of downtown Winnipeg, the James  Avenue Pumping Station drew water from the Red River for distribution to the area’s fire hydrants. The building was declared a municipal heritage site in 1982.

We offer high and low table seating. We feature a custom made wooden bar top and 2 large family style tables built by local designer Jordan from Beard Brothers Woodworking. The refurbished brick structure is punctuated by vintage fire hose carts, red hydrants, and copper fire extinguishers. At the center of it all, the preserved machinery is our star attraction.

Went to eat here back in December for a birthday brunch and haven’t had the chance to review and just going off from what I can remember but let me tell you this is probably one of Winnipeg’s greatest gems and A MUST-VISIT. The hostess was really nice and accommodating, I always expect restaurants like this to have snobby employees lol but James Avenue Pumphouse is different! I wish I can remember their names but they sat my partner and I at a lovely table with a nice view, my partner asked for a sample of a couple of craft beers before he ordered and they knew the drinks menu very well! The menu for entrees was appealing and even had some history about the building. Waited for awhile for the food but my partner and I were too busy soaking up the view and truly enjoyed the environment of the restaurant. I ordered a poke bowl and partner ordered a hamburger w/ DELICIOUS fries that I mooched off from. The food is 9/10 for me only because I would love to try other items on the menu but they were delicious, every bite was umami filled. Restaurant vibe during lunch hours is a 10/10. Will check it out with friends for dinner in March (the most available reservation available for me to book). So BOOK NOW!

They definitely have a nice atmosphere. At this point they weren't asking for vaccine verification so I headed to the bar to wait for the rest of my 20-person party. My old- fashioned was delicious. Our two-table party ordered separately by table, but the restaurant struggled to make sure that each table's orders were coordinated so that one table received their dinner together. It was 10 minutes between the time the first order landed on the table to the last. Manners tell us you wait for the last person to be served at a table before everyone can begin dining so this was a major error. I ordered the mussels with coconut and chili but was served a Mussels In Pernod but no one asked me if that was alright as it wasn't what I ordered. It was well prepared but at least one of the mussels was broken and I wondered if they tried to open a dead one or if was left over from another order. They need to make sure there are no broken shells in the dish. They were served with pita bread and fries but the sauce was too thick and the broken shells showed up more than once. Great atmosphere but service needs work and quality control should be better. I'd still give another chance.

An absolute favourite! My partner & I have gone here a few times already and will keep coming back. Such good food (we love the variety of the menu), great atmosphere and always have had wonderful service. Parking is easy (sometimes can be hard/sparse in this part of the Exchange) and they make it super easy to find a reservation online. Can’t wait to come back soon!

A first visit to this new establishment. Enjoyed the renovation of this old pump house, maintaining history and creating a innovative restaurant. For our Sunday lunch we enjoyed a clubhouse sandwich and tacos today. Many more great options on the menu for another day. Worth the visit!!!

It's really awesome to see this part of downtown coming back to life with all these new cool bars and restaurant. It's right across from the Mere hotel and cibo water front restaurant and they did an amazing job renovating this historical site to a cool place people come to enjoy food and drinks. Happy hour is pretty good as you can get some basic shots for $4. Cocktail menu seemed very interesting too. Due to the covid capacity we had to wait an our before we could get a table for two so if you are going there for a date you have to plan ahead of time.

My sister and I visited for brunch and were very happy with the experience. The atmosphere was welcoming, the food and drinks tasted great and customer service was fantastic. Food prices are decent, although the drinks are on the more expensive side. The building itself is so unique and beautiful. I love what they did to the place but agree with other reviewers that you feel the cold air whenever someone enters/exits. It's definitely worth checking this restaurant out though. The menu has so many great sounding dishes to choose from so we will definitely be back to try something different!

Great little find in the heart of Winnipeg. From fantastic service, to a colourful menu, this place fits the bill. There’s lots of options to accommodate any diet, and I’m happy to see a decent choice of veggie options too. I went with the Dan Dan bowl followed by the house made Carrot cake which didn’t disappoint at all. To top it off, you get that rather trendy and rustic backdrop of the former pumphouse which complements the decor and vibe of the restaurant. Only negative is that it’s worth wearing an extra layer in the restaurant. Each time a patron enters/leaves the place, the whole dining area cools down very quick. Thankfully, it’s not enough to damper the experience of the restaurant.

Another great addition to Winnipeg’s Historic Exchange District. Beautifully restored with the original 1906 Fire Pump House equipment on display. Happy hour drink specials 7 days/wk with 2 time slots per night (see happy hour menu). Menu is not large but fits the bill for basic eats. I had the Dan Dan Thai and it was great (but would have love more veggies in it ?). Service was fantastic and attentive. Only complaint is you cannot serve white wine in a red wine glass ?. That’s the cocktail nerd in me. Check it out.
