About Salisbury House (Exchange District)

The Salisbury House restaurant chain has been serving quality food for over 90 years in Manitoba Canada. Known locally as Sals, the chain is considered an iconic Winnipeg institution. The first Salisbury house restaurant opened in downtown Winnipeg in 1931 by founder Ralph Erwin, who named is new eatery after the Salisbury Steak. Erwin was not fond of the term hamburger so he named his now famous burger a Nip making reference to a small nip or bite of Salisbury Steak.

In 1979, Erwin sold his majority interest in the company to a group of local business owners, who brought the ownership of Salisbury House back to Winnipeg, from the previous Montreal based owners. This group included majority shareholders, Earl and Cheryl Barish. In 2006, Mr. Barish became President and CEO of Salisbury House of Canada Ltd. Currently, he serves as Chair of The Board. The balance of ownership comprised local business owners and professionals; including Winnipeg icon Burton Cummings, the lead singer of the world famous rock group, The Guess Who.

Currently, there are 8 FULL SERVICE Family Restaurant locations, and the Sals Market. Sals also operates in two golf courses, runs a car hop, offers full catering services, cake decorating, private event hosting, and more!

I like the new location. It's different with the old architecture, open atmosphere, and staff are accommodating, friendly. I've been a few times, had the chicken burger platter twice which was good. For dinner I recently ordered the battered white fish and chips off the 55+ Silver menu for $11.99. I didn't want two huge pieces of fish as has happened at some other places when ordering off the regular menu. I asked the waiter how large one was and he described it as rather substantial and I said that was more than enough. But what i got was surprisingly small, looked more like a large fish finger. It tasted good but people should be informed the portion is rather tiny, more like a snack.

Came in for Sunday breakfast and found out that there was only one server. She was handling the whole place by herself with grace and calmness. Kudos to her for her service.

I visited Winnipeg for the first time and my coworkers recommended Salisbury house for lunch. I ordered the famous Sal’s nip (what they call a hamburger) with fried onions and oh so yummmmy, so good! Friendly service, hearty food and all around great experience. Check it out if you’re ever in town!
