Governance and Policy

There is an increasing emphasis on good governance at all levels of the public, private, and voluntary sectors.  Whether you are an elected official, board member, or executive leader in a board governed organization, good governance requires an understanding of roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities.

Good governance is based upon good policy.  Boards govern through the development of policy and have authority over and are accountable for the outcomes of the organization.  Good governance is accomplished through strong linkages with those that the organization serves and represents, providing clear guidance to those tasked with achieving the goals of the organization, and monitoring of organizational outcomes.

Building effective policy can be complex and difficult.  However, good process and an understanding of policy basics can take policy-making from being  tedious and challenging to being exciting and rewarding.
