Our History:

Since 1938, we have played a key role in Alberta's ever-changing business environment.  Always striving to be a fashion leader; introducing new and exciting brands each season.  Henry Singer Fashion Group was founded by the late Henry Singer.  With $300 in his pocket, he started his first store selling made to measure suits.

During the World War II years, Henry Singer served in the Air Force Entertainment Corp.  In Edmonton, his wife Millie temporarily transformed his suit store into a baby shop.  When Henry returned home, service men were eager to shed their uniforms.  They needed clothing.  Henry rapidly grew the business.  In 1948, the Edmonton Eskimo Football team was born at the back of the Henry Singer Menswear store.

In the early 1950s, Henry Singer helped break down the colour barrier in Edmonton.  In the 1950's some of our famous promotions like the "Cat and Dog" and "Dirty Shirt Sale" were started.  Henry Singer sponsored the elite "Town Hall" men's basketball team which went to Olympic qualifying tournaments.

In the early 1960's, Henry Singer adds a second store at Westmount.  In the mid 1960's, one of Henry Singer's new ventures was "Henry III"- the Wizard of Mod.  This was Canada's original "Mod" shop featuring the looks of the Beatles, Carnaby Street and King's Road.  In the late 1960's - Henry Singer adds their fourth store at 103 Street and Jasper Avenue and goes upscale - introducing Burberry's of London and Hardy Amies to the Edmonton market.  In 1968 Fred Singer joined the company.

In the early 1970's, Henry Singer closes all four stores and consolidates them into the old Birk's store on the corner of 104 Street and Jasper Avenue.  The store quickly becomes the talk of the Canadian clothing industry.  Many new lines appeared in Canada for the first time in this store, including Hugo Boss and Ermenegildo Zegna.  In 1977 Fred Singer becomes president of Henry Singer Fashion Group. 

In 1980 our founder Henry Singer passes away.  In the early 1980s, Henry Singer spins the ladies wear business off to a separate entity - "Blu's".  In 1985, Henry Singer moves into the new Phase 3 development at West Edmonton Mall, with two world-class stores - Henry Singer and Polo Ralph Lauren.  Henry Singer opens up its Calgary location, at Bankers Hall in 1989.  

In 1994, the Henry Singer store at West Edmonton Mall undergoes major expansion, doubling in size.  In the mid-1990s, two new retail concepts are born - "Hanks"and the "North Wall".  Hank's later becomes a shop-in-shop within Henry Singer stores.  The last of three North Wall stores is sold in 2000.  Henry Singer sponsors the "Henry Singer Alberta Open" CPGA tour event - from 1995 - 1999. Jordan Singer returns from 5 years in London England after successfully leading Hugo Boss' UK Wholesale business to join Henry Singer Fashion Group.  Henry Singer expands to include a new mall based concept and boutique designer denim stores.  In 2004 Henry Singer Fashion Group is awarded Innovative Retailer of the Year by the Retail Council of Canada.  Jordan Singer is awarded Marketer of the Year in 2008 by Alberta Venture Magazine.

Continuing our commitment to offer a unique assortment of world class brands, service and fit within exceptional store environments, Henry Singer embarks on a significant capital investment program to refresh stores. The flagship Manulife Place store undergoes a complete refresh including new departments, a major made-to-measure enhancement, and the addition of Canada’s most exclusive private shopping suite. In 2012 we complete the renovation of our Bankers Hall location, similar in scope to the Manulife Place refresh, this location also adds retail space and an exclusive private shopping suite.

We celebrate our next chapter with opening of new flagship store in Eight Avenue Place. The new store spans 6,006 square feet and encompasses an elevated, highly-experiential consumer lifestyle offering. Designed by award-winning architecture and interior design firm McKinley Burkart. Signature features of the new store include VIP change rooms, a luxury private shopping suite concealed behind a bookcase, an onsite barbershop.
