The hospital staff here lack everything you think a health care professional would have - they lack compassion, dignity, professionalism and so much more. We know someone who got admitted at this hospital and it was an absolute nightmare. Because of the COVID mandates we were not able to visit - which understandably so; but you would think that the staff would be more willing to give updates over the phone to alleviate some stresses and worries but they were not willing to do that whatsoever. I understand that we are in a pandemic and the staff may be tired and run down, but this is the lively hood of people in our lives that we love and they did not care or bother to give us the time of day. When we would call to ask for an update coincidently the nurse would be on their break every time we called, and when we got told we were speaking to the unit manager we asked for an update on the patient and they asked what we needed an update for.. I was in absolute disbelief. When we asked what unit they were admitted to, we were told that they were discharged (which is not possible without us, the family, knowing) later, they apologized and said let us transfer you to...Meaning they are using any excuse they can to get rid of the person calling. I have lost all and any trust I had with this hospital because of this horrendous experience. If you can go to a different hospital, I recommend it.

MENTAL HEALTH. I spent the night due to a psychotic episode and this is honestly and truthfully the first time I've been treated like a human being during the course of my mental illness hospitalizations. I had run through all my local hospitals and had bad experiences all around and this time my mom decided not to subject me to those hospitals again. She went out on a limb and drove me way out to grey nuns and there I was, surprisingly treated very humanely. The nurses at grey nuns had not forgotten mentally ill people were human. I was offered warm blankets, I was given I've water. I was even given a face mask and ear plugs. At the Miz when I had a bigger psychotic event I was forgotten in a glass quarantine room and hardly let out to pee. This was a huge improvement. Nurses were very friendly. Now that I'm a little less shocked from the experience I'm a little choked up over how it could have been the entire time.

There’s no compassion in this hospital, it’s quite sad. I’ve had to deal with a plethora of issues in the past year which has unfortunately lead me to coming here NUMEROUS TIMES (the nurse made sure to make a little jab at that one) as it is very close to home. On two occasions I’ve been told to “suck it up”, though I was dealing with a spinal leak that was made by their staff. There’s a nurse at the front triage named “J” who is absolutely horrendous to people and lacks empathy, which is strange because most nurses become a nurse for this very reason. I had to unfortunately experience her yelling at me not once but twice. The first time because I simply rang a call bell (what is it there for if we can’t use it?) the second time because I was having extreme chest pain- and she forgot to order an ecg. This same very day she yelled at a coworker for pushing a patient to the window to see her too quickly. This obviously effected the poor guy because he seemed upset after and even asked her not to yell at him). It is BEYOND unprofessional not only to patients, but to your coworkers. Burn out is a real thing, sure. But if this is the way you treat others then maybe it isn’t the job for you?

I’m really surprised to see you such a low review count on this place. I went in one morning with severe lower abdomen pain and waited maybe an hour to be admitted. Once in the back the staff treated me very well and took good care of me. Turns out I had gallbladder issues and needed it removed. I had surgery that very same day and got to go home in the morning. I am so thankful to all the nurses who took care of me. Oh and yes thank you to my surgeon and her team!!

The reason why this hospital has the shortest wait times of all the hospitals in Edmonton is because no one wants to go here! Go to the U of A and wait longer so you can actually get proper treatment. Do not go here. The triage nurses are horrible… came in with suspected acute appendicitis (was in emergency the day before and was sent to get an ultrasound, came back to emergency because radiologist told me I needed to go back as he believed I had appendicitis). Triage nurse was horribly rude, as soon as I came up to triage and began telling her I was here yesterday already and explaining what my health issues were she interrupted and said “so why are you here today”… while I was in the middle of telling her the history of why I am back again. She also told me that acute appendicitis is “not a medical emergency” and she has people actually dying. Not sure how appendicitis isn’t an emergency, and last time I checked those working triage are not doctors? I’d love to know where she got her medical degree. Ironic that she said i wasn’t a priority because less than 10 mins after I sat in waiting room a doctor brought me in and called a surgeon. Oh, and the day before they “misplaced” the requisition for me to get an ultrasound, and had I not advocated for my health and continued to call, I wouldn’t have been able to go for an ultrasound and wouldn’t have been able to get treatment. I’ve already began to file an official complaint with covenant health. When I was actually in the hospital though, the male nurse I had was amazing and the doctors and surgeons were very kind and compassionate.

Great care for patients and their visitors. My partner went to the emergency room and he ended up needing surgery. Nurses were wonderful at helping me find his room, they gave me the time and space to be with him even after visitor hours had technically ended. I was also able to come early before his surgery in the morning. They took great care of him and treated me well as a visitor.

I went to the grey nuns today for day surgery and had a great experience. There was a gentleman at the front door screening for Covid and he was hilarious, really lightened the mood. Made me feel good as soon as I got in as I was pretty nervous. All the nurses were friendly but it was really the operating room staff that was incredible. I told them about previous bad experiences when going under and having a panic attack. They made feel comfortable and calm. I really appreciate this and I am super great full for the positive experience.

We had a great experience at the Grey Nuns. During the arrival of our first born we had great service and first hand look at how hard the nurses, doctors, and nurse practitioners work to provide the best health care possible. They had excellent parking and the parking app was easy to use, in-room machines, and even free fabric face masks for outpatients. Appreciate the staff at Grey Nuns.
