About Grain of Rice

The past

Grain of Rice first entered Edmonton's restaurant scene as Treasury Restaurant in 2005. Treasury was run by my parents, who took great pride in using locally sourced ingredients in traditional Asian dishes and maintaining a loyal customer base. Unfortunately, the restaurant's success was short-lived. In 2012, Treasury was engulfed by a blazing fire that spread from a neighboring building.

It wasn't until 2 years later that I began giving the restaurant industry some serious thought. At the time, I was fully immersed in the world of Supply Chain Industrial Internet of Things (IoT). I realized that while I was using my expertise in information technology to help accelerate other people's goals, my family's growth and happiness had come to a grinding halt. It was then that I felt the need to take charge.

In February 2016, I incorporated Grain of Rice under my IoT company and began discussions with Cushman Wakefield to search for a new location. Ambitious, but inexperience and over-confident, I thought that building a restaurant would be as easy as building a supply chain. Little did I know just how challenging it would be.

The food here is great. But if your going to eat in, don’t expect the service to be good in fact there isn’t any. To order you have to order through their online menu and pay right then before they bring anything including drinks. No one comes by to check in with you, and certainly not to bring you any to go containers. And this place isn’t cheap either so it feels underwhelming to get subpar service and every time I come, I question whether I should come back but… I come here because I like to eat their pho fresh instead of take out even though i feel like it’s a burden on them because I know they would rather people take out. However……..I understand that we are in the midst of a pandemic and restaurants are trying to avoid spread at all costs so at the same time I can also appreciate their apprehensions to providing customer service.

I have been going here since you guys opened, have loved the food and always supported you guys throughout this pandemic. At one point I was ordering once a week! But today I called to place an order, asked for what I like to think is a simple request that I’ve never had anyone decline at any other restaurant. I asked for pho but instead of meat to add shrimp… price is not an issue for me. The answer was no sorry we can’t do that (tone seemed annoyed by the question) and I asked again because I assumed she heard wrong but she said you guys don’t do that. I’m just very confused why it’s an issue or that you guys wouldn’t do it… but no reason was given just no. I was ordering a good amount of food but I was mainly ordering for the pho with shrimp. I just don’t see why you would let an entire order go because of this? It caught me off guard and I was really looking forward to your food. If I was even told why I would be more understanding I was really surprised and confused about it.

I've been visiting this restaurant for a few years now. The quality and the taste of the food has been consistently great. The vermicelli bowls and Singapore noodles are the best I've had in Edmonton anywhere. I would and have recommended this restaurant to my friends and they are all of the same opinion. The price is on the higher side but that is the cost of good quality food and with no tipping at the restaurant, the price becomes irrelevant anyway. Love this place.

We have been coming here since they opened and have ordered for pick up many, many times. Something has changed. My last 2 orders were sub par. The chicken was dry and the deep fried wontons were so over cooked they are were inedible. After our last visit for lunch, we will not be coming back. The atmosphere used to be nice and the service was great, however now you have to order, pay and tip before you get your food. You are expected to pay a ridiculous amount of money for tea but only received one pot. We were told the reason was "it's really good you'll see why". After spending almost $90 on 3 meals and 1 appetizer, we asked for a water, she told us that water is $1.00. All we could do at that point was laugh. See ya never! Bob's out!

Yorokobe, shonen. The mapo tofu is the farthest thing from All the Evils of the World. It's subarashi. Absolutely delicious, and worth the slight extra price. Spicy but not TOO spicy, with absolutely great tofu chunks. Meat was *exquisite*

I’ve been to a few Vietnamese restaurants in the city and when talking about quality, Grain of Rice is unmatched. I believe it has a lot to do with their fresh and locally sourced ingredients which reflects in their pricing and worth every penny! We ordered: Satay pho – The broth was absolutely SOUPerb! Very flavorful with a kick and the meat was tender, juicy and ..? Beef with rice Noods – Generally one of my favorite Chinese dish and trying it here did not disappoint! 100% would recommend! Green Onion Cake – Never tried anything so addictive in my life until I came to Edmonton. Their goc was cooked perfectly and not too salty nor too doughy ? Other notes: Service was quick and friendly. The environment was clean. Free Wifi is always like the cherry on top. Love the QR menu with payment idea. So efficient ? Will definitely come back to try their other dishes PHO sure!

There is no service from this restaurant, open kitchen. You can hear them cooking, chatting. No table side service. Pricy and protein very small. But the food quality was fantastic. Fresh and delicious!!! If you are looking for awesome food. You have to try them out. If you are looking for an overall experience… this is not the best option.

Brilliant service and even better food! Loved the taste - best I've had in Canada so far! The tofu was so crispy and the sauce was heavenly. The house chicken fried rice was also amazing and the portions are perfect. The fried rice is almost definitely enough for two.
