Dr. James Lai

I go to Dr. Joyce Sun for many many years and she is a good Doctor. If I have to wait to see her, I will take my time to wait for my turn. She is just as human as you and me. She works hard and if it takes a bit longer for her to be with another patients then it is a good thing because she cares. Dr. Joyce Sun, You Go Girl!

I was Dr. Lai's patient for 31 years, with the exception of the few years I lived too far away to realistically travel to see him. He never looked up my childhood medical records to learn that I am also mildly autistic. When I told him he laughed at me. Ridiculed me. I walked out of his office ashamed of myself and embarrassed. He always thought I was making my symptoms up to get drugs or attention. I'm indigenous and he only sees the stigma and stereotypical Indian not a human being.

Dr. James Lai has taken care of our whole family for +20 years now. We feel we are being looked after by one of the best doctors in BC. (Note: On occasions, we have visited walk in clinics and hospitals for emergencies. We can compare.)

This clinic is horrible. The receptionists and rude and the doctor could not care less about you, she only cares about prescribing medication so that she can get paid more. Dr Joyce Sun has been my family doctor for over 10 years and ALL of my family members have gotten deathly ill on her watch. Last year, my brother had pneumonia and Dr Sun did not know or even come to that conclusion after doing a physical examination of him in her office, we were convinced that he was sick from his raspy cough so we took him to a walk in clinic 30 minutes after, and within 10 seconds the doctor said “he has pneumonia.” My grandma never had a pap test, and then she ended up developing cervical cancer where she almost died and my mom had to argue with Dr Sun to get her an appointment with BC Cancer agency. Oh and one more thing, 6 years ago my mom had developed very large fibroids in her uterus and Dr Sun knew this because my mom complained so frequently about them, but she did nothing to help her. So one night my mother was bleeding so much that she fainted and fell and hit her head on the toilet and I called the police to send an ambulance and my mom had to have an emergency hysterectomy at Burnaby General hospital. We switched and it was the best decision ever. You’re sick? Don’t count on Dr. Sun to give you any blood work, because she doesn’t like to “waste” government funds that YOU pay MSP for on reasons such as these. I am so thankful for my new family doctor who takes the time to listen to her patients, and performs tests when appropriate. Just be weary, Dr Sun has a lot of patients, so she does not care about your needs. Also you can make an appointment, but expect to wait an hour - 2 hours just to get in. Appointment time means NOTHING.
