About DASCH - Direct Action in Support of Community Homes Inc

Last summer DASCH worked on brand refresh in the form of a new logo and tagline. We wanted an update that represented the progress DASCH has experienced since first starting.

In 1974, DASCH began as a group of families who wanted to provide community-based support for their family members with intellectual disabilities.

Looking back twenty years ago, DASCH supported 59 adults, had recently opened our day program location on St. Anne’s, and celebrated Karen Fonseth’s – now CEO, then Executive Director – first year at DASCH.

“DASCH has always been dedicated to inclusivity and providing crucial resources and tools for those living with an intellectual disability,” Karen says. “DASCH’s evolution has enabled us to expand our services to continue meet the needs of the people we proudly support so that every opportunity is made available, and is theirs to choose.”

Today DASCH supports over 160 people, 55 homes, and three-day program locations. We have expanded to offer vocational training so the people we support can secure employment, and recreational programing that benefits mental and physical health and offers the opportunity for genuine relationship building.

The services and opportunities DASCH has provided over the years has evolved, and it’s time to tell the next chapter of DASCH.

Our new tagline “Greater Possibilities’ enhances DASCH’s strengths and embodies the spirit of our constant goal to build and inspire a community of inclusion where people with intellectual disabilities are valued and enabled to live to their full potential.

Does great things for community but not a great job to work for. Perks: Used to have flexibility as a supervisor but that was ripped away. Great benefits 100% employer paid for. Overtime readily available. Paid mileage & on-call premiums. Cons: Over worked & underpaid. Favouritism. Not appreciated. Nice CEO but oblivious to money mismanagement and corrupt staff at head office. Nice if in university as support staff but wouldn’t recommend as full time gig.

DASCH is an incredible organization to work for! They really care about the individuals they support and make every effort to continue to improve in every area. The staff are supported and are appreciated by the senior management team.

I have worked for this Agency for years. There are quite a lot of people working for this agency who are dedicated and committed to supporting individuals with developmental challenges live a meaningful life. There are a lot of people with empathy and a good level of patience to be able to support these individuals day after day. The agency has good policies and practices that enable the staff to provide the necessary care needed. Although the rate of pay for the support workers is not so high, DASCH offers an average market rate and beats most other agencies in this field with the benefits package provided for its staff, including health benefits for part time staff. It is a non unionized work environment therefore most of the decisions are made at the head office but lately there has been an improvement in getting staff at all levels to participate in decision making processes. DASCH is one of the good agencies providing a noble service!

Applied for location supervisor and last second switched up into a support worker. Did not take the job as thats not what I applied for. Bad dishonest recruitment practices.

Dasch was an amazing place to work for. The team work and positive attitude made not going in to work a hardship but a joy. I was hired as a temp within the Agency and I have not seen a company so organized and consistent with their diligences and hard work doing the pandemic. They were friendly and kind and truly believe in the cause of what their company stands for.

I have been working for this organization for just over a month. I have felt welcomed from the very start! Everyone is so friendly, helpful and organized. They really do live their values and Mission in the work that they do and the support that they provide to their clients. I am thankful to have the opportunity to work with this organization and look forward to a long career with them!

I worked at Head Office for a number of years, so my experience and reviews will be a reflection of my time in the office, not in the field. To start with the positives, my time at DASCH was a pleasant one. My team and co-workers were friendly and I developed some great relationships with people around me and I had a very supporting supervisor. The work they do is fantastic and you can see the change they make in peoples lives. I was given opportunities to grow and try new things my own way, without being micromanaged and I had a lot of fun most days. On the negative side, I did not trust the directors and the choices they made. At times it seemed like they were making obviously bad decisions which probably cost the company more money. Although my team was great, there is still a very clear divide amongst various teams at Head Office and especially with field staff. It seemed at times that these different teams would be "fighting" each other instead of working together. I want to end my review on a positive. If I could go back to before I signed my offer letter, knowing what I know now about the company, I would make the same decision and work here again. I received great work experience and was given the opportunity to learn and grow. And although I did not completely trust the direction we were going, I was always a part of change and felt important in my role. DASCH is a good place to work if you are starting in your career, or need some part time work on the side.
