About Co-op Pharmacy Midtown

History

Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store

Back in the mid-1950’s, Calgary Co-op was just getting started; the first store opened downtown on November 15, 1956 with a small but enthusiastic grand opening celebration. Founded by farmers, ranchers, and food producers banding together to sell their wares to a dedicated membership of local buyers, Calgary Co-op is truly the original “local” grocery store.

The idea behind membership in a grocery co-operative like Calgary Co-op was to allow members to own and have an interest in the success of the store—and a say in the products it carries. Members have a financial interest in the success of the cooperative (often through receiving monetary returns based on the frequency of shopping and spending) and in turn they support its success by shopping there.

The grand opening of “store number one,” was held on November 15, 1956, and despite the success and elation at their entrepreneurial venture, it was a small affair. While the local press declined to cover it, Calgary‘s then-mayor Don MacKay was there to cut a ribbon, and the 1000th member joined on that very day in November.

By 1958 membership had climbed to 3,350 and Co-op purchased the land next to the downtown centre for a service station. In 1960 Calgary Co-op had opened its second store, the North Hill Centre on 16th Ave. NE. Membership grew to 5,525, sales reached $2 million, and that time the staff numbered 115. Soon after, more new stores opened including the McLeod Trail Centre (1963), and Brentwood Centre (1965). Membership climbed to 23,038.

Gordon Barker probably says it best: “Calgary co-op was formed by ordinary people who wanted a business they could rely on when others failed to provide them with the services they needed. We must never lose sight of why Calgary Co-op was formed: to serve its members and to be a contributing partner in the community.“

Why do you make me wait 20+ minutes when you actually have my stuff ready in seconds, and I actually can see that? Do you have any respect for other people's time? Disgusting ?

This has got to be the worst pharmacy I have ever dealt with! I dropped off my prescription on Monday. On Tuesday, they leave a message telling me my prescription is not covered by my insurance and please call them if i want to proceed. I call them back immediately Tuesday morning and tell them i want to proceed. They said it will take 2-3 business days because the medication needs to be compounded. I didn't hear back from them on Friday, so i called them Saturday. To my surprise, they did not send the prescription in for the medication to be compounded when i clearly instructed the gentlemen on the phone on Tuesday to please proceed. They said the medication will now be ready the following Tuesday. What a joke!

The manager is so great, the staff help me extra with my paperwork and the pharmacist catches my doctors drug interactions. They also if you let them know you, actually care. Sometimes its not all smiles and this place is super busy! Thanks guys so much for being a rock since my accident.

Today I came and bought some groceries, to my dismay, I didn't have quite enough money to cover my bill, so I asked the woman working the till to remove some items. Instead she scanned the remaining items and paid the difference with her own money. When I asked her what she was doing, she wished me a Merry Christmas and said she looks forward to seeing me again. I have never had someone show kindness to me like this before, and it warmed my heart. To the woman who was working till 10 at 4:45, Saturday December 12, you made my day, thank you soooo much. To the management, please consider giving her a raise, people like this make the loyalty of your customers a non-issue. God bless.

I've been trying to quit smoking for a long time. I've always tried doing it my own way (cold turkey) and it's worked for a bit but never long term. I finally went and sat down with Callie in the pharmacy department. She was amazing. Probably one of the nicest ladies I've ever met. She provided quality care and was extremely knowledgeable. I was amazed at all the different options I had to help me quit. If your trying to quit or even thinking about quitting, Go see Callie.

Went to the pharmacy to get vaccinated and I was very pleased with my experience. Due to an online booking error my appointment was double booked but they still accommodated me. The pharmacist and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. I wish I had asked the name of the tech who administered the shot, she was so kind and helped put me at ease.
