About Chrysalis-An Alberta Society for Citizens with Disabilities

Our story begins in 1968 when the Industrial Research and Training Centre (IRTC) was created, a first of its kind agency that trained adults with developmental disabilities to produce manufactured goods. IRTC was an empowering alternative for individuals who no longer wanted to stay in school or be inactive at home.

After four years, IRTC became the Western Industrial Research and Training Centre (WIRTC), a non-profit society operated by a volunteer Board of Directors. WIRTC evolved into Chrysalis in 1992.

By 2018, Chrysalis had undergone many changes, most notably adopting Human Centered Design (HCD) as a service delivery model. This model optimizes customer satisfaction and outcomes by focusing on people, collaboration, and services made with people rather than for them. By implementing HCD, we ensure that the human perspective is accounted for throughout the entire program design process, allowing the designer to truly understand the challenge in order to produce the right solution. Our personalized approach outlines the individual’s unique hopes, dreams, abilities, and life goals and helps them to realize their full potential.

It's a good place to start to be able too learn about yourself and others and away to make friends who share the same things the teacher that made me who I am today.

Wow, that's all I can say about everything that Chrysalis does. I have been to their Info Sessions a couple of times and really, to get the full experience of what they do, GO TO AN INFO SESSION!!! They have both employment services and a volunteer program for people with intellectual disabilities. On the employment side, clients are assisted in finding meaningful employment in the community. On the volunteer side, the clients help out in various ways throughout the community - there's this amazing board of who is where, at what time, and who is there to support. It's a logistical balancing act that is very carefully done and has accumulated over 50,000 volunteer hours in the last year! AMAZING! There is also a phenomenal art program. I couldn't believe the level of art that came out of studio there - just blew my mind. Some of those most beautiful pieces I have seen! Check out an Info Session and enjoy lunch there too! Also - go to the Art Show!! Oh, just stop by the building and see everyone! Everyone is so nice!

A fantastic not for profit organization that has been helping disabled adults create a life of independence and responsibility. Easily an organization to get behind and serve.

Amazing place with amazing people. I only wish it didn't have to be dependant on the government, because they could provide a better service to more people, but I know that's not possible so I'm glad they exist.

I've known of Chrysalis for a longtime. They have recently changed their leadership, regretfully I don't have much hope that the organization will be better managed. They seem to place more importance on optics rather than concrete measure that improve lives. My cousin is a client of Chrysalis and has undergone their Human Centred Design program. To date, nothing has changed in his life. I also think its interesting that many of the people reviewing Chrysalis are their own staff. Do your research, there are better managed organizations in Edmonton.

This group is terrible with helping people with disabilities when it comes right down too it. They also lie to cover their ass with other organisations. Do not go here. They will give up on you. Simple.

Chrysalis is an awesome organization that does very important work. I went there for an info session and was very impressed. The staff were friendly and showed a genuine kindness and caring for the people they serve.
