building3 Calgary’s Inter-Faith Furniture store may be under the radar of many Calgarians. But to newcomers and disadvantaged Calgarians, we’re the place they turn to when they need help in furnishing homes for their families.

Imagine being down to nothing but the clothes on your back, living out of a suitcase. This describes the situation many newcomers and disadvantaged Calgarians find themselves in.

Their first step on the road to a brighter future is to put a roof over their heads. But who do they approach for all the basic household furnishings? This is the central mission of Calgary’s Inter-Faith Furniture Society. Working out of very modest premises in NE Calgary, we have helped families bridge difficult times for the past 17 years and counting.

Those in distressed circumstances who are referred to us do not have to pay for their items. Those with some time to spare can join the “work for furniture” program, putting in hours at the store in return for basic furnishings.

The Mission of the Calgary Inter-Faith Furniture Society is to donate furniture and household goods to economically disadvantaged individuals directed to the Society by recognized agencies and faith groups.

The Calgary Inter-Faith Furniture Society is a humanitarian organization, entrusted with the distribution of donated goods in a fair and principled way. It is administered by an unpaid, volunteer Board of Directors.

A	Alaa Yaseen on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Items are great, but Maureen is a discriminator/racist, and so hard to communicate with. Only fax she uses, she would never look at any word document list you would normally send. She might never answer although you could have called for months she once helped one of our org’s Syrian client only because he showed up with his white Friend, she would let him in immediately And it never happened again. I wish she changes her manners cuz no thing is worse than being mean towards ppl depending on where they born, yes, I understand many of them are not doing great to help themselves, and few are abusing the systems, but she should trust us who do the referrals.

My opinion is based on my experience thank you .

She followed us around like we were going to steal something and then accused us multiple times of putting in the wrong places or messing with items. She swore under her breath at my partner when she was detangling the already tangled yarn from a basket for a ball of yarn she wanted.

I then looked at the reviews on Google and found this is far from unusual. Also, a number of reviewers reported negative interactions with the staff, so we have donated the items elsewhere.

Tried to donate a barely used mattress and a used-but-good-condition recliner chair and they refused both.
S	Susie Ngo on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a barely used double mattress and bed frame we wanted to donate. We had bought it at the end of August 2021—both items were used for only 2.5 months. The total value for everything was over $350 and they were highly rated on Amazon (4.5 stars out of 30k-40k reviews.) We wanted to give them to someone in need because it didn't fit the space we originally intended it for. We disassembled everything and waited a week for the drivers to come pick it up. Once they arrived, they claimed that the mattress had a "stain" on it and that the items were in bad condition. Then they tried to charge us for them to take it to the dump. These items were bought less than 3 months ago and used gently. I've attached a photo below of the corner where they said there was a "stain". As you can see, there is no stain. The wasteful attitude was completely shocking to me, not to mention charging us to dump an item we were donating. I used to work for community resource centres that refer low-income or struggling clients to get free furnishings from this store. This was why I wanted to donate here in the first place. I was expecting my bed to go to someone who needed and could use it, as I know the waitlist for this program could take up to weeks, if not months. Overall very disappointed with this store and would not donate here again. We ended up giving it away to a very appreciative family on Facebook who came and picked it up the same day. If you want to donate items and know they are going to people who need it, Facebook marketplace is a faster and more efficient option.

There are two stories packed full of every item you’d expect at a thrift store, though there isn’t anything special about the pricing on the non-furniture items.
