About Artistic Bake Shop

On August 1st, 1966 brother’s Anton and Joseph Schwabenbauer, both Master Bakers from Germany, opened the Artistic Bake Shop. They started in a 1000 square foot space in the Mayfield Shopping center in Edmonton’s West end. After a time Joseph left Baking to pursue a career as an Auto body mechanic.

Anton continued in the bakery with his wife Marianne working the front sales counter. Together with their staff they produced many fine European breads and pastries that are still available today.

In 1974, Anton and Marianne purchased the property at 6820 – 104 Street where the bakery sits today. Retiring after 26 years in the Bake Shop, Perry their second eldest son, together with his wife Katherine purchased the Bake shop in 1992.

Perry has worked at the bakery since he was 12 helping, learning and discovering his passion and later receiving his journeyman’s ticket in baking at N.A.I.T. in 1988. He has a deep dedication for the baking trade, and has actively participated on many committees. Serving as an employee member for both the local and provincial apprenticeship and is currently the out going 2012 Presiding Officer for the Provincial Apprenticeship Committee and Chair for the N.A.I.T. advisory committee.

Katherine worked many years across the table with Perry in the production and now concentrates on the day to day running of the shop. She also sits on the Local apprenticeship committee.

Artistic Bake Shop has been involved with the Edmonton Heritage Festival since the beginning, providing authentic traditional European products to different pavilions over the years.

We continue to support the “Keep Edmonton Original” an organization about supporting and sustaining local and independent businesses in our communities.

We continue to produce the same quality products from scratch with as many local ingredients available, and many added new ones. Providing excellent customer service, never wavering from the passion with which Artistic Bake Shop was created.

LOVE this bakery! This is my family's favorite Bakery in all of Edmonton, we've been coming here for more than 20 years. They have the most amazing pastries and breads. The Sovital bread is wonderful, and we order the 7 layer torte for pretty much every birthday.

One of the best kept secrets! Their selection is great and baked goods are to die for. WHEN you go, you must buy a loaf of the cinnamon bread!

A wonderful German bakery in south Edmonton that has been run by the same family for decades. The pretzels are, of course, exemplary along with their pretzel buns (pretzel buns are Friday and Saturday only). Their variety of pastries, tortes and pies are almost overwhelming on what to enjoy first! Danishes and the Quark Cheesecake are my personal favourites. The breads and buns are naturally sourdough leavened and have a deeper flavour because of it. It can be busy on Fridays and Saturdays, but like any independent bakery, it’s best to call ahead if you want something specific. They have such a magical selection that going in on a whim is perfectly fine too!

Great selection of breads and pastries. The two different bread loafs I bought were wonderful; the cranberry walnut rye had a nice chrewy crust and was filled with nuts and dried fruit, and the white bread was soft and pillowy. Price were great, and the staff were efficient and helpful. I can see why this has been a staple since the 1960s. I'll definitely be back!

Very considerate and friendly staff who were quick to help us even though it was close to closing hour. Bought a carrot cake for my brother's birthday and it was beautifully piped and tasted great, albeit a bit dry. The store's design also has a very warm tone and makes you feel welcome as soon as you come in. Would love to try their other cakes for celebrations throughout the year. Definitely recommended!

This bakery is exceptional in many ways. From the inviting atmospere to the sinful treats and pastries offered there, its amazing! The prices are reasonable considering the level of heaven your getting. I even heard someone that works there speaking fluent german to a lady who came in and spoke german. Cool. I highly recommend for breakfast, or lunch and takeaways. Edit: Just found out its a german bakery. Ha.
